There are times in life where you never really realize how much you underappreciated someone until they are gone…
Darnell Cooley is a cook at Heidelberg University and has been for the past 15 years and 8 months. I have only known him for 3 years now and he might not even know my name, but has impacted my life immensely and I never realized it til now…
At Heidelberg, Darnell has the morning shift as a cook everyday besides weekends. He is known for his tremendous eggs, hard-working attitude, and the constant smile on his face. For the past couple of years, Darnell has made my eggs just about everyday during the school year. I would always ask him “4 over please” and he would ALWAYS respond by saying “no problem” with a SMILE on his face. While he cooked my eggs, he would not just wait for the eggs to be done. He would ask me about my day and what I was doing over the weekend. If you were lucky and wore Ohio State attire, your eggs would be served with a side of snarky remarks. After handing me my eggs he would say “I hope you have a great day” and I would say “you too”. One day, this scenario would all change…
One morning I woke up, got dressed, and basically sprinted to Hoerneman dining hall for breakfast. When I went to order my eggs, I noticed that Darnell was not there. I honestly did not think anything of it. I thought maybe he had a day off, but when I did not see him for over a week I knew something was wrong. I asked around and I learned he has Rectal and Prostate cancer. At that moment I became not only sad for what has happened to Darnell, but irritated with myself. Each morning this hard-working man made me eggs and I never thought to ask him how his day was going or what he was doing over the weekend. This experience taught me to always appreciate the people you have in your life. Whether it's the person who makes you eggs every morning, a relative, best friend, or even a random stranger -- ask them how their day is going. You never know if you will ever see them again.
Luckily, Darnell is in his recovery process from his Chemo treatment and will hopefully be back to his normal self soon. All of us who are part of the Heidelberg community miss him dearly and hope to see him back.
I have shared my story and can guarantee that many other students here at Heidelberg could tell one very similar to mine. We all really appreciate what Darnell does for us - whether it be a simple conversation, a smile, or his famous eggs. Darnell is very personable and has made connections with many of the students and staff here at the Berg. Whether you are a student, alumni, or member of this community, please help us out and spread the word or donate what you can to be a helping hand.
Thank you very much!
