Hello everyone. This is Nancy’s daughter Emma. I wanted to provide family, friends, and the Delta College community with an update on our mom’s condition, on behalf of my sisters and myself.

When released from the hospital, our mom stayed in a rehabilitation center for approximately 3 weeks. On March 5th, we were finally told mom would be coming home since she was getting stronger each and every passing day. Upon coming home, we had to set up a space for her and all the necessary equipment and medical needs required to ensure that she continued to make improvements and be comfortable.

My sisters and I have had to take on the role as the care providers for our mom, along with the support of our grandparents and aunt. This includes helping with personal hygiene needs, preparing meals, lifting her in and out of bed and into the wheelchair with the hoyer machine, assisting with medications and injections, and overall any daily necessities that she needs. In terms of her physical progress, her ribs are fully healed, as well as her back pain. All of the surgical cuts have healed on her left leg but there is still a lot more healing that needs to be done internally for it to be strong enough to start walking. Her left leg has gone through a major surgery considering that the femur bone was completely broken in two areas.

So, it will still be a while until the left leg is fully healed and strong enough to support walking. Her right ankle was crushed during the accident. So, mom had to undergo surgery on the ankle. Now that the stitches have been removed, our mom is working on getting the ankle stronger, so she will be able to stand and eventually able to walk on her legs which will take time.

Our mom is striving for the goal of being able to stand and walk confidently but right now she is working on strengthening her upper body and legs. Mom currently has an upcoming appointment in late May to determine whether or not she is able to begin physical therapy to start walking. It’s been close to 3 months now that our mom hasn’t been able to walk but we are here making sure she is building up the strength both mentally and physically to be able to do so.

The hard work has been paying off because we were able to get mom to stand straight for a minute earlier today! There is still a long road to recovery ahead for our mom both, emotionally and physically, but with all of your support, we know our mom will be strong enough to push through. Since the road to recovery will be long, we are still not entirely sure when our mom will be able to return to work.

We ask that you send your prayers and any donations for the long road to recovery that lies ahead for our mom.We are unbelievably proud of her and know she’ll be able to get through this.

We want to say thank you for the countless number of visits from everyone, gifts of encouragement and support, and the overall outpour of love everyone has shown our mom and family. We are so grateful for all of the support during this difficult time and our mom deeply appreciates everyone's help during her time of need. Again, thank you and we hope to share good news in the upcoming months

With heartfelt gratitude,

Emma, Emily, and Ella Esparza
