Hey everyone, for those who don't know, I am booked in to have my breast removal or "top surgery" on the 25th of June 2019 at Masada Private Hospital in Melbourne.
This is a massively important affirmative surgery for my medical transition, not just for my mental health but also for my physical health, as several years of non-stop chest binding has wrecked quite a lot of havoc with both my back, and my ability to breathe freely on a regular basis.
I have already met with my surgeon and payed a non-refundable booking fee of $300.
The breakdown of fees for this surgery that I have been quoted and coats associated are as follows:
Surgery fee - $6000
Anesthetist fee - $2500
Private Hospital Stay - $3500-$4000 approx.
(And an extra $2000+ if something goes wrong and I need to be there another night)
Accommodation - $1200
Travel - $400
All up roughly $14,600 (or $16,000 should something go wrong during surgery.
This is something I have been diligently saving for over the past 8 years and I was all set to cover these costs completely until, as most of my friends and family know, I needed to leave the house I was living in quite desperately for my mental health and in some cases my physical wellbeing too.
As my housemate is only a part time employee on close to minimum wage, and we are still paying off the last of our previous rent, I have had to foot the bill of at least $4000 for this move for the time being. And with our rent increase to just under half of my monthly paycheck, upcoming service connection fees, and the various costs associated with moving into a new house without much in the way of furnishings, I am not going to be able to put away enough savings to make up the difference within the next 40 or so days before my surgery.
Everyone who knows me well will know that I do not do well asking for money, even for things deserving of it such as my time and skills (see my artworks or cardmaking) and it pains me to ask for my friends, family and community to support me in a way that I have always felt is my own responsibility (financially).
So this is actually not even really an exception because I don't care how long it takes me to fulfill, I will personally create a handmade thank you card for every person who donates $2 or more to this fund, and will paint a postcard sized watercolour painting of a subject of your choosing for every person who donates $100 or more.
Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me throughout my transitions, both medical and social, you all mean so much to me and I am eternally grateful to have you all in my life.
