Nate's Quest for a New Heart: A Journey of Hope
Donation protected
In January 2024, my brother Nathon Rodrigues, a vibrant soul and dedicated art teacher, faced an unimaginable challenge. At just 44, he was diagnosed with heart failure, a condition with only one solution: a heart transplant.
Raised and educated in Hawaii, Nate taught for eight years In the Hawaii Public Schools before relocating to Chicago with his family. After finishing his MFA at DePaul, he continued teaching in local schools to spread his passion for art. Nate's life has been a testament to love, creativity, and resilience.
But above all, his family has been his cornerstone. Nate, his wife, and their 11-year-old daughter, who adores "The Wizard of Oz," once embraced the spirit of the Tinman without knowing how prophetic that choice would become.
Now, Nate's condition has forced him from the classroom, cut his family's income in half, and thrust their finances into turmoil. Nate has used up his sick leave and his employer does not offer short term disability. He is currently on unpaid FMLA leave.
This isn't just Nate's fight; it's a family battle. Our father, too, was a heart transplant recipient, which allowed him added years of cherished memories. We dream of giving Nate the same chance—to witness his daughter's journey into adulthood, to celebrate her achievements, and to share countless more moments together.
However, the road ahead is daunting. Fortunately, Nate has health insurance coverage through his wife’s employer, but we all know there will be many costs that will fall to Nate’s family.
In addition, during this time of transition, Nate’s family is struggling to cover their living expenses while he explores other disability options. Even if he gets any approval for disability, it is months down the road.
Here's How You Can Help
We've started this GoFundMe to lighten the load on Nate and his family during these trying times. Your support can bridge the gap between hope and hardship, offering Nate a chance at a future filled with love, art, and family milestones.
Every contribution, no matter the size, is a beacon of support. As we navigate these uncertain waters, your generosity can pave the way for Nate's return to health and to the heart of his classroom and family.
Please help by sharing Nate's story. When you do, you're helping us spread a message of hope and community far and wide.
From the deepest parts of our hearts, thank you for joining Nate's fight for a new beginning.
