Help save this Halesite woodland from over development!

Nathan Hale Nature Preserve, Inc. is a non-charitable, not-for profit corporation formed by our community, and committed to preserve and protect the environmentally sensitive and historically important, steeply sloped, Bay Avenue-Vineyard Road property situated in the heart of Halesite.

The woodland property has been aptly described as “the lungs of Halesite” by the President and CEO of the North Shore Land Alliance. In addition to native plantings, the property features historically noteworthy and unique varieties of rhododendron and azalea cultivars propagated, planted and preserved by a founding member of the Nathan Hale Garden Club. The property is home to hundreds of wildlife species including: fox, deer, Cooper's Hawks, visiting pairs of Bald Eagles, woodpeckers, Northern Long-eared Bats, and mating pairs of Great Horned Owls.

The citizens of the Town of Huntington share our values and have repeatedly voted to fund efforts to preserve open space whenever possible – $60 million since 1998. But, in recent years, environmental damage caused by over-development of these properties all across Huntington is apparent. The open space character of our town and local communities is being degraded. The eco-health of all our properties has been adversely impacted.

Nathan Hale Nature Preserve, Inc. has been forced to bring a civil lawsuit, Article 78 Proceeding, to annul the February 26, 2024 Town of Huntington Planning Board approval of the developers’ preliminary subdivision plans and to order the Planning Board to literally follow existing laws and to give effect to our community supported protection of this property. This takes a significant financial commitment to achieve this important goal. We anticipate $60,000 has to be raised to fund non-biased engineering studies and our attorneys' considerable efforts to preserve this vitally unique open space.
