Rio Spurr is a beautiful 3-year-old boy and is the son of Chloe and Tommy Spurr. As a family, their lives were turned upside down in April of last year when they received the most devastating news that no parent would want to hear. Their little son Rio became unwell and was later diagnosed with a very rare form of kidney cancer that affects only 80 children in the UK each year.
Rio's diagnosis meant that he had stage 4 cancer in his right kidney and it had also spread to his lungs. Rio then had to undergo months of intense chemotherapy, followed by 10 days of radiotherapy whilst taking a cocktail of 6 different drugs to support his condition.
The poor little boy also had to endure a gruelling 4-hour operation to remove his right kidney and primary tumour.
After everything that Rio had endured his family then received further devasting news. Rio's cancer was Anaplastic meaning the cancer is made up of unusual and rapidly dividing cells making it very high-risk and resistant to chemotherapy. This makes the cancer much harder to cure and more likely to return following treatment. To compound matters further, Rio's cancer also displayed large components of Blastema a second rare characteristic which is distinguished by its rapid and aggressive evolution, making them the most malignant of cells.
Rio and his family face a further period of uncertainty, and while they would be overjoyed if scans in June showed that Rio was cancer free, it will not, however, mean that the ordeal for Rio is over. The high-risk and Anaplastic features of Rio's diagnosis make his chance of relapse high. Should he relapse he will not have many (if any) options left for treatment and Rio's chance of survival will plummet to around 10%. And this is the whole reason behind all the fundraising for Rio.
The family may find themselves in a desperate position, with a need to access a clinical trial overseas, and they have been working tirelessly to be prepared for whatever is needed to save Rio's life.
But in reality, the family can only do so much in reaching out to friends, family and the community around them. It is for this reason that the Eco-Power Group and its employees are supporting the Spurr family, and are joining the fight for Rio.
We are starting our fundraising campaign with the infamous 3 peaks national challenge. This gruelling challenge will be undertaken by Eco-Power employees, Dave Colakovic, Craig Thompson, Dan Horrobin, and Dave Bowdler, alongside Tommy Spurr himself. They will be climbing the UK's 3 largest mountains consecutively over 24 hours, The challenge will commence at 12 noon on Thursday 11th May with the climb of Ben Nevis (14 km), from here the team will be transported directly to Scafell Pike, the largest mountain in England (10 km) where climbing will commence at 11 pm the same night. The third and final climb will take place the following morning May 12th at 8 am, where the weary team will tackle Snowdon the highest mountain in Wales (14 km).
Eco-Power Group is aiming to raise £70,000 for Rio and his family. We realise that this is somewhat of a tall order in this current climate but we have to try in the same way that Rio and his family have had to try and fight every day since the news of Rio's terrible illness.
And it is a race against time, we only have a couple of months to reach our funding target.
So please join the Eco-Power Group in supporting the Spurr Family to reach their goal and save their wonderful little boy, Rio Spurr.
