The National Votes for Women's Trail Markers Arrive in Washington, DC

In celebration of the suffrage centennial, the National Collaborative of Women’s History Sites  (NCWHS) is creating a digital marker trail identifying suffrage sites around the country that were local, regional, and national spaces where women fought for more than 70 years for the right to vote.

The William G. Pomeroy Foundation joined the NCWHS to add to the digital maker trail by supporting the creation of a physical marker trail to further raise consciousness about the struggle for women's suffrage in America.

Dr. Ida Jones, frequent Port Of Harlem contributor and University Archivist at Morgan State University, is the DC State Coordinator for the DC project. “Some states started earlier, some states have teams, but for DC, I am it,” she says.

Despite the challenges of being a one-woman team, Jones said the national coordinators approved four of the six sites she submitted. The four sites are:

128 M Street, NW, site of the old M Street School now Dunbar high school;
326 T Street, NW, the Mary Church Terrell home;
1601 R Street, NW, the national headquarters of the National Association of Colored Women; and
1707 New Hampshire Ave, NW, the national headquarters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

The Pomeroy Foundation is paying for the fabrication and shipping of the markers. Jones says she now has to identify and pay for a contractor to install the markers.

As state coordinator, it is Jones responsibility to raise $2,200 to install the markers. Jones added, “the project is a great opportunity to showcase the contributions Washington, DC residents have made to our nation's history.”

Note:  Wayne Young, Publisher of Port Of Harlem magazine, is managing this campaign.  All proceeds will go this project.
