On Thursday morning, Sarah Hutchins Hawker had an accident while in Bozeman, Montana on the Luther League trip. It was dark and she accidentally went through the wrong door and fell down a flight of stairs. She was immediately found and taken by ambulance to the hospital there. As they didn’t have a neurosurgeon on staff, she was airlifted to Billings, where she remains in ICU.
Sarah has several fractures, a major concussion, bruising, swelling and other injuries from the fall. She is still being sedated to keep her stabilized and allow her to heal.
They will soon begin weaning her off the sedatives and see how she responds. The doctors have told us this will be a long slow process and to not anticipate knowing much more information in the next few days. While we prefer getting quick answers and solutions, we are learning how to move through this day by day, minute by minute.
Sarah is receiving top notch care and we are thankful for the skill and compassion of the people here. Lauren, Nathan and Kirsten are back in Iowa. Sarah’s sister Nancy, Ross, and Kara are still here.
The most recent plan;
- she is being kept sedated for a few days so she can heal and give swelling a chance to go down
- Dr. Anticipates starting to very slowly wean her off of the meds. They will adjust as they see how she responds
- at this point, no surgery is planned
- we don’t anticipate having much more information for several days- including potential surgery, specific diagnosis and/or treatment protocol
Anticipated costs will be;
- hospital bills
- transport costs
- lodging
- meals
Thank you for all of the thoughts and prayers and generous offers we have received. Our family feels your prayers, love and deep concern for our beloved Sarah.
