N'Dyah's Education Abroad in Spain
Donation protected
Greetings Family and Friends,
My name is N'Dyah (pronounced India) McCoy and I am from Athens, Georgia. I am a first-generation college student studying Psychology and Spanish at The University of Georgia. I am currently in my second year at The University and aspire, after graduating, to establish my own holistic private practice as well as study the Spanish language and culture so that I may be able to reach and teach a larger audience outside of the English language.
During my time in college, I have ensured that I engulf myself in new and unfamiliar circumstances as the opportunities are presented to me. Thus far, I have participated in several programs that have shaped and molded me into the woman I am today. I have a passion for helping others so I decided to partake on a journey called UGA IMPACT where I traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to help rebuild a housing roof for an elderly woman. This experience allowed me to connect with such pleasant individuals and create lifelong friendships that would have not been possible without this expedition. Additionally, I am involved on campus, as a member of the executive board, for organizations including Georgia Daze, which recruits minority students to increase diversity. I have assisted with the conduction of psychological studies in research labs, served as a personal and academic mentor and tutor, volunteered with the on campus athletic department, praise dance at my church as well as maintaining a part-time job. In each of these endeavors, I have learned more about myself and the importance of my action for the betterment of others.
As I have overcome many obstacles and successfully conquered goals that I’ve set for myself, my next journey in which I plan to embark is a semester long study abroad experience in Madrid, Spain. I plan to continue learning even more and really immersing myself in a culture unlike my own. By the end of the semester, I plan to return home fluent in Spanish and more knowledgeable about the world, the people in it and myself. As I continue to adopt and adapt to different methods of thinking, I hope to become a more well-rounded individual.
I have been admitted to the IES Abroad Madrid - Language and Cultural Studies Program. There, I will continue my studies for both Spanish and Psychology in the target language. This program also includes field trips throughout Spain, cultural excursions, housing accommodations, health insurance while abroad and necessary travel documents. I am most certain that this experience will equip me with the essential tools that I will need to becoming bilingual and reaching the goals I have set to be able to communicate and help others cope with the obstacles of life across language and cultural barriers. In addition, I would gain practice and understanding of how to effectively attend to different types of people.
As a future Psychologist and Educator, I would like to prepare myself in such a way that I am able to adapt quickly to foreign situations while remaining culturally sensitive to those around me. I desire to be the very best that I can be, in all that I do.
I am beyond excited for this opportunity I would be more than grateful if you all would help me sponsor my trip to Madrid. While I have received some funding for the program cost itself, I am still in need of support for additional costs not included in the program fee such as flight costs, travel document fees (passport and student visas), class credit transferal processing fees, eating expenses while abroad, public transportation while abroad, health insurance while abroad and other expenses during my Spanish studies. This will make a total of $6,000 (US dollars) that I would need to raise by August 1, 2017. The love and support from all of you would mean so much to me as I embark on a journey that, for a long time, seemed unattainable. Thank you in advance for your generosity and willingness to give to a cause that will propel me into a successful future. May God’s peace and blessings be upon all of you!
Humbly Grateful,
N’Dyah McCoy
