God is the Defender of Widows and Orphans
The Bible tells us that God considers Himself to be a champion of widows and orphans. Psalm 68:4-6 explains that “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.”
Christians Should Protect and Support Widows and Orphans
Consequently, the Bible calls on Christians to do God’s work in protecting and supporting each widow and orphan, and it does so in both the Old and New Testaments. Exodus 22 lays out a number of laws for the Israelites to follow. Verses 21-24 make it clear that at a minimum, God’s people should not “take advantage of the widow or the fatherless.” Otherwise, God says, “I will certainly hear their cry. My anger will be aroused.”
The Bible also clarifies that it is not enough to simply refrain from mistreating these women and children. Instead, Christians must make a point of actively supporting them. Psalm 82:3 instructs us to “defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and oppressed.” This is such an important part of doing God’s will that James 1:27 states, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
