Neighborhood cycles gotta keep rolling!

Donation protected
This campaign benefits Green Machine Cycles, a bicycle shop primarily serving the Ravenswood/North Center/Uptown neighborhoods in Chicago. Today's priority is clearly to organize around defeating the coronavirus and treat those who are suffering the COVID-19 illness. Many people work at essential jobs and need to travel to support those in need. We are an essential service to them. Bike shops provide support and goods needed by those who must or who choose to travel by bike. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has declared bike shops essential services! To meet current restrictions, however, we have decided not to sell bikes or let people browse our showroom. As bike shops function on very slim margins, even a two-week suspension of normal activity will push the shop into an unsustainable position.

Your dollars will do two things. First, the cash will allow us to balance our expenses against revenue expected to be lost in the pandemic-fighting distancing efforts. Second, and perhaps more importantly, your contributions build community through an incentive that gets better as more people participate. To keep the business going we would love to see participation start today and grow quickly before the end of March, 2020.

We will be so grateful for your help! This is an opportunity to encourage friends and family to pitch in for a necessary community service and to save more money in the process.

The fundraiser works like this:

When we hit $1,000 those who've pledged will get a 3% discount on anything in the store through the end of 2020.
When we hit $5,000 everyone who's pledged will get a 7% discount on anything in the store through the end of 2020. When we hit $10,000 everyone who's pledged gets a 15% discount on anything in the store through the end of 2020.

Pretty awesome, right? We're hoping this gets folks to think about their community, who's in it, and to get people encouraging each other to support our shop, an essential service in the neighborhood. The more people who know about this, the better.  Just about everyone is feeling the stress of this health crisis, perhaps the health care workers the most. But communities need to keep chugging along, taking care of each other, protecting each other's health and safety, and remembering that at some point this will diminish and we'll get back to doing the things we love to do. Until then we need to think about ourselves more communally than we ever have and to maintain connections with each other in awkward and remote ways that feel all wrong.

If you support us we will feel that much more attached to all of you and we'll see just how much we mean to each other. Sometimes it feels like we've been distancing ourselves from one another for years. This crisis, strangely, presents an opportunity for which we will be grateful in ways beyond the dollars we need. It's a chance for us to see just how interconnected we are and one way in which those connections can be positively exercised.

Speaking of exercise, let's get to it. Stay home for now, everyone, so we can all get back outside on two wheels, preferably together!
