Nepal Burn Fund-Medical Care for Burn Victims
Donation protected
Approximately 56,000 burn cases are reported per year in Nepal. Of those, 2,100 people with burn injuries die annually in the country. Burn injuries can occur to anyone at any time, but the majority of the cases are from economically challenged families. It is easy to get burned in Nepal due to the deadly combination of a risky environment and lack of awareness about safety measures. However, even basic first aid and primary care are often unavailable. Patients with major burns need to travel for several hours to days due to the rugged geographical terrain of the country.
Kirtipur Hospital, run collaboratively by Kirtipur Municipality and Public Health Concern TrustNEPAL (phect-NEPAL), has developed a center of excellence for the treatment of burn cases in Nepal since 2013, and referral of burn cases to this hospital is in increasing every year. The hospital treated over 660 referred burn cases in 2022, and 444 burn cases in the first six months of 2023.
Why Support the Fund? The number of referred burn cases is increasing every year from different parts of Nepal at the Kirtipur Hospital. More than 80% of these cases come from economically deprived families, and the referred burn injury cases range from moderate to severe, requiring longer and more complex treatment. These patients often need multiple surgeries, and the cost of surgery and supplies is high, which puts many families at risk of facing catastrophic health expenditures.
