Financial State of the Candor Emergency Squad

The Candor Emergency Squad is a not-for-profit 501c3 organization that has provided emergency medical care to Candor and surrounding communities for 57 years.  It is not a tax base funded organization and solely relies on fundraising, donations, billing and grants received for operating costs.

The Candor Emergency Squad has always been a volunteer organization depending on volunteers to be the EMT’s and drivers.  In 2020 that all changed.  The squad usually response to an average of 600 calls a year, in 2020 the squad was not able to cover many of these calls. This was due to not having a volunteer driver and or a medic available. To continue to provide service to the community they have been forced to hire people to perform these services.  This hiring has been a huge financial burden.  As of right now, if we do not get some type of financial help the Candor Emergency Squad will no longer be in business come mid to late summer.

To explain:

Yes, the Candor Emergency Squad bills for services.  A large portion of our billing is NYS Medicaid and Medicare with the remainder being commercial insurance.  These insurances reimburse at 25% - 45% respectively.  Based upon a $1,600.00 bill the squad receives between $400.00 - $700.00 per ambulance call.

Candor Emergency Squad as a first step approached the Town of Candor.  The town is on board to help, but they are not able to help with the amount needed in 2021 to maintain its service.  They will be on board for 2022.

Many organizations are reeling from the lack of volunteers and the Candor Ambulance Squad is as well.  We have been asking people to donate time.  That being said, currently there are just a few EMT’s left in Candor, mainly because of the training and the responsibility that goes with the job.  Because there are so few EMT’s in Candor our medics and drivers are coming from other towns and are in town ready to respond.  These medics are putting in countless hours to get their certification and to maintain it.  They do this for a living, why shouldn’t they be paid?

What will happen late summer if the Candor Ambulance Squad runs out of money?  Your emergency medical help (ambulance) will take anywhere from 25 to 60 minutes to get to you.  If you have an emergency situation do you really want to wait that long?
