New Girls Dorm - Ambedkar Sanskar Dham School
Donation protected
During a recent trip to India, I visited Dharmaj, Gujarat, the town my father grew up in. He experienced the loss of a parent at a very young age, and grew up to be passionate about helping children who face the same difficult circumstance. In 2011, my parents turned this passion into action by building a science center for the Ambedkar Sanskar Dham School in my father’s hometown, dedicating the center to my late great-grandmother. This school, built for students grades 9-12, works with students who have sadly lost either one or both of their parents, and do not have other family members to turn to.
I am currently studying to become a teacher and I can’t help but think about the students in Dharmaj who have experienced unimaginable loss but wake up everyday with a hunger to learn and succeed. What could these students achieve if they had all of the tools and resources that the average U.S. student has? It has inspired me to follow the example set by my parents and expand on their efforts.
While in India, I spoke with the principal and discovered that there is much more work to be done. Over the last eight years, the school has grown quickly and it now faces new challenges in order to provide a quality education for the children who come to the school with so much hope.
My husband, Munesh, and I have helped build many of the improvements that this school desperately needed. This includes rebuilding the science center that was destroyed from termite damage, installing a new water heating system so the children who live there can take warm showers, providing a gas line to help power many of the schools facilities, and supplying key educational materials the school was lacking. The most important thing we’ve been working on is to build is a dormitory for the female students, and we need your help to bring it to life.
Currently, the school only houses male students. There is no facility to house the female students, who travel 4+ hours a day to attend school and do not always have safe homes to return to. While the school has the appropriate amount of land to create a home for these young girls, they lack the money or resources to do so. While we have begun to fund this project, we hope that with help from family and friends, we can bring it to the finish line.
Gender inequality has been a longstanding issue in India and in third world countries. Numerous studies have shown that a society at large benefits when women are educated because they transfer that knowledge to their families and communities. Educated women lead to improved health, improved household income, and an improved economy. The Ambedkar Sanskar Dham School is tackling this head on and has made a big impact. However, without a girl’s dormitory, they lack the proper facilities needed to empower their female students. With your help, we can show these young girls that they have not been overlooked and that they too can rise above their hardships to fulfill every last one of their dreams.
Please help us to provide these girls with the proper facilities they need to succeed. My family and these students would greatly appreciate any help. No amount is too small, and each donation is capable of making a change in the lives of young, underprivileged girls. Girls who will go on to become teachers, philanthropists, prime ministers, doctors, lawyers and leaders of their country if they have a safe place to live and be educated.
We welcome any resources and assistance beyond financial donations. Positive vibes and words of encouragement are always welcome, and will help us continue to work hard to give these amazing students what they deserve – so please spread the word! Together, we can all act as a voice for these students. Together, we can become their companions and champions. Together, we can become guardians of their well-being.
“We’re in this together. Because these girls are our girls. They are us. They each have the spark of something extraordinary inside of them just like our daughters – and our sons – and their fate is very much our responsibility.” Michelle Obama
