From our Ghanaian doctor:
"As a doctor working in a district hospital, we often witnessed several instances where patients didn't access healthcare because of the cost or lack of education. Patients resort to traditional unsubstantiated methods which result in very serious outcomes. An example is the high stillbirth rate because pregnant women do not access healthcare facilities for antenatal services or delivery. Some perform unsupervised home deliveries sometimes resulting in complications and fatal outcomes.
The health sector in our rural communities in Ghana is inadequate, inaccessible or both. Even with the national health insurance system in place, families cannot access many services and specialist care because those services are not covered. Our Healthcare system is grossly understaffed with poor remuneration for workers, and a lack of equipment needed to provide common basic health care. These coupled with the high illiteracy in our rural communities lead to mortalities and morbidities that are preventable.
Individuals in our communities die every day because even the basics needed to sustain their lives are not available."
Our Mission: New Haven aims to create a well-resourced healthcare facility that will cater to the needs of the elderly, women, and children who are more vulnerable in our communities.
Education is the backbone of every progressive society, and we believe creating an avenue where individuals can engage and be educated on modern and preventative health care, would help build a stronger and healthier society.
This facility will be accessible with a subsidized cost of service. The planned community outreach programs will be an avenue to engage the communities through health education.
Why New Haven? The saying goes charity begins from home, and our homes, or our communities, fall within the lowest income bracket and the need is great. You contributing to getting the New Haven Health care facility up and running, is you contributing to the health of a community that desperately needs it. Our health is the world's wealth." - Dr. Priscilla Buahin
