New Home for Recovery

Imagine being told that in two months, you will lose your home and safety, while you are already working through one of the most difficult times of your life. This is the devastating situation that 16 men in Salisbury, MD, are facing during this holiday season. They have been living in recovery housing, working hard to fight addiction in a safe and sober living environment. Now, they are facing homelessness.

On January 15, 2024, these 16 individuals will be left without a place to stay, and without the support of a sober home to continue their recovery due to stigma and a lack of basic human compassion.

Homes4Hope has provided recovery housing since 2017.

These Level 2 Recovery Residences, often called sober homes or sober living, are alcohol- and drug-free recovery housing that use house standards, rules and peer accountability to maintain safe, healthy and structured living environments. Every individual has to live by the strict rules while being a resident in one of these houses.

Due to circumstances out of our control, bed capacity at two of our recovery houses has been reduced to an unsafe number of residents. We are diligently looking for alternative housing to support current residents and working with non-profits to help financially assist our residents who are looking to transition to independent living.

Anyone who has changed their life and is living the life of sobriety should be celebrated, not condemned. Affordable housing is a huge problem in our area. These men have been given the impossible task of coming up with first and last month’s rent, a security deposit, utility connection fees, furniture, dishes, and cleaning supplies in just 2 months, while actively working towards building a sober life for themselves.

Stigma Highlighted, a collaboration project with the Art League of Ocean City and Worcester Goes Purple (Stigma Highlighted Projects), is an awareness project completed with local artists and people in recovery. The goal of this project is to highlight those in recovery and change the sometimes negative public perception of them caused by the stigma associated with addiction.

Izzy Huber, a senior at Worcester Preparatory School in Berlin, was one of the artists who participated. Izzy has continued to support the recovery community and would like to help these 16 men in their endeavor to find permanent housing and assist them by providing a strong foundation to continue their recovery journey.

All funds will be deposited and administered by a locally registered 501 c3, WGP Warriors Against Addiction, Inc . The funds will be paid directly to approved rental agencies, utility companies, and to purchase needed household materials. No cash will be distributed.
