New Home and Life for Dad
Donation protected
Family, Friends and well wishers,
My name is Beth Johnson-Crawford.
I began this fund in November of 2016 to provide the financial resources to build a room for my Dad to live with us.
My Dad lost his partner of 26 years in July 2016. He was 85 years old and had been living in her home for over 20 years. All who knew them, knew they were "husband and wife" , although they never married.
Unfortunately, she never updated her will, as he had done, to make provisions in the event of her death.
Her children stepped in and took over and the result was that he was EVICTED. YUP, and a formal one too!
Evicted from the home he had spent 20 years helping to improve, restore and maintain.
It was heartbreaking and incredibly stressful!
We sought legal councel, and could have fought it, but it would have cost a lot of money and a lot of time in litigation to "prove" common law marriage rights.
At any rate, he had no place to go and he needed to be OUT by Dec. 28th.
My siblings and I did not have any extra room to provide a proper living space for him, nor did we have the financial resources to do this. So we began the Go Fund with a $7000 dollar Goal. We received nearly $3000 in donations initially and we are SO grateful for all the support and love shown to us.
We got the space completed on Christmas Eve and Dad moved in. But it came with a hefty price tag, literally and figuratively.
My husband and son were the ones under most of the stress of this project. It was a lot to do, in a short amount of time. I am so grateful they had the skill and knowledge to do this. But then, disaster struck.
3 weeks after moving my Dad in, my husband had a stroke! Actually he had a series of strokes, was hospitalized and is now recuperating at home.
All who know us are aware of all my husbands medical concerns ( Heart condition, COPD, Chronic Pain from a near fatal construction accident in 1997 that crushed both his feet and left him with back and neck injuries) and we are so grateful that #1, he is still here with us and #2, as far as we can tell, there was no permanent damage.
Thank you God!! I would be devasted right now.
My Dad felt terrible; He felt it was his fault.
Once again my world, our world, was tipped upside down. That is one reason why I have not been promoting this Go Fund. I have been very busy caring for my husband, my Dad, my grandkids and trying to keep my business going.
I am the primary breadwinner in my family. This is very challenging for me and I am not very comfortable asking for help. In my world, I am the one helping others!
We paid what we could with the Go Fund Donations.
They just actually covered having the heating system installed. The rest we had to charge, which as I mentioned we were really NOT in a position to do, and I drew from our property tax fund. We now have a tax lien on our home.
If we could reach our FINAL goal with this GO FUND, that would help immensely to relieve the stress of this untimely financial burden to me, and my family.
I am just one person. My husband is disabled and does not work. He receives minimal money from SS. I am a self employed person who has to care for a lot of people with physical, mental and emotional issues, including my Dad. My Dad has minimal income as well from SS. He still drives, has a car to pay for, and other bills he had to pay prior to his partners death.
It cannot be said enough, how grateful we all are for that which we have already received. But I must continue to pray, and believe that the goal will be reached, and we can get all those remaining expenses paid off!
If you are a friend or family member and would consider sharing this and letting your circle know that you KNOW me and know first hand about this situation I would greatly appreciated it. We all know lots of people.
If 300 people could be reached and could donate $10 we can reach our goal! At $20, we would only need 150 people to give...you get the idea.
If you are able to help, I hope that whatever you can give, whether $5 or $500, comes back to you as a blessing for you, and your loved ones.
Thanks so much!
Beth
