New Life Orphanage and Christian Life Academy

Hi, I’m a volunteer for Plan My Gap Year Ghana and, along with a group, am volunteering at both New Life Orphanage and Christian Life Academy. Over the next 6 weeks, with the help of the local community, we will spend our time caring for and teaching the children in Kumasi. We have seen firsthand the incredible impact donations could have and would be so grateful for anything you could give.
At New Life Orphanage, nuns, priests and local volunteers care for 150-200 children, many of whom are physically disabled. The majority of the children at the orphanage have lost their families due to illness or accidental deaths. Some have been abandoned and, with poor mental health prevalent in the Kumasi area, it is also common that parents are unable to care for their children themselves.
As well as providing the orphanage with necessary food, clothing and funding for education, your donations will contribute to the physical therapy programs run by the orphanage to help the physically disabled children to stand and even walk unassisted.
At Christian Life Academy over 300 students ranging from 5 to 12 years old are taught by a handful of wonderful teachers. Over the past week we have seen the concern the teachers have for the success of their students but have been equally struck by the difficulties they face due to their lack of resources. With sometimes only half of the class having textbooks, pens and exercise books, learning soon becomes conditional.
As well as your donations providing more of these resources, they will also help fund a new computer for the school, giving the older students the opportunity to learn invaluable skills, essential to their success in their chosen career paths. Louisa (Year 5) aspires to be a teacher herself.
