New York Magazine Layoff Fund
Donation protected
Last week, Vox Media announced layoffs of employees across the company, including about 20 of our coworkers at New York magazine. The layoffs were made despite our union's efforts at cost-saving alternatives that would've saved jobs. (You can see our union's statement here. ) Some of those people who were laid off had been furloughed in April, though not all of them.
At that time, we created a fundraiser through which we were able to help raise money for those freelancers and colleagues who lost their income. (Those funds were already dispersed.) Now, we’re creating this fund to help those who have been laid off. Facing uncertain employment during a pandemic, they’ve been let go from their jobs as the CARES Act's expanded unemployment benefits, an extra $600 per week, is set to expire.
We'll divide the money we raise equally between each person who applies for aid. We hope that it can help make up for lost income, and cover rent, living, and health expenses.
If you've been laid off and need help, please email us at [email redacted].
