New-Kan-Oh-Miss, River trip of a lifetime, 1987NM
I am an organic farmer and former nurse. My farm is nestled in the Appalachian mountains and is starting to be impacted by drought. For the last 3 years my springs have dried up in August resulting in crop losses.
By doing the New-Kan-Oh-Miss river adventure, I hope to bring more awareness to water shortages nationwide and water pollution in my watershed. My springs are part of the watersheds that flow to the Gulf.
Beginning July 7, I plan to kayak 1895 miles starting close to home on the New River, continuing on the Kanawha then Ohio rivers, to join the Mississippi until reaching the Gulf of Mexico, 10 weeks later.
I'll be covering anywhere from 20-60 river miles per day in a pedal-paddle kayak with a sail handy for big, open water. At night I'll hammock camp at parks and on private land and fish for dinner when the water is healthy enough. When I reach the more polluted waters of the Ohio, I'll sustain my calories with dehydrated food I've prepared ahead. My kayak and helmet will be outfitted with Go Pros to record all the thrills, spills and quiet times.
Its taking a bit longer than expected. Who knew how low and slow the water would get this year. More surpising days ahead I'm sure. The caloric requirement has been a total shock and I am amazed at the nutritional needs of my body. Pedal and paddle energy up to 10 to 12 hours a day is astounding.
