Newsome High School – Odyssey of the Mind – World Finals 2022
Newsome High School's 11th grade Odyssey of the Mind team has qualified for WORLD FINALS by placing 1st in the State of Florida competition.
What is Odyssey of the Mind?
Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving competition that helps students develop skills in problem solving, critical thinking, teamwork, math, engineering, science, writing, and the performing arts. Each year teams choose one of five different problems to solve.
This year, the Newsome High School team chose the Escape vroOM problem. For this problem, our team had to design and build three unique vehicles which would travel to areas within the "Escape Room" and complete various tasks. Each time a vehicle completes a task, it returns to the group with a "clue" that the group will then use in the next area to release the next clue, and so on. When the vehicle performs the final task, it will reveal a final clue that allows the group to escape the room and discover the mystery behind the room. The team designed and built the three vehicles, wrote the script, created all of their own scenery and props, fabricated their costumes, and learned about teamwork and creativity along the way!
World Finals will be held at Iowa State University May 25 - May 28. More than 850 teams from throughout the U.S. will compete at World Finals.
This team of students has been competing together for the past 7 years! They are also the first team to represent their schools in the Odyssey of the Mind competition (FishHawk Creek Elementary, Randall Middle and Newsome High School). In their seven years of winning, they have been awarded:
1st place regionals (six years)
1st place states (five years)
4th place states
4th place world finals
6th place world finals
8th place world finals
11th place world finals
This is the final year our team will compete together and they want nothing more than to take the first place trophy home from world finals this year!
In order to attend, these students need to raise approximately $10,000 to get their five-member team and coaches to Ames, Iowa. This money will be used to pay for registration fees, travel expenses, campus housing, meals, and expenses associated with shipping their vehicles, scenery, props, and costumes.
We are so excited about this amazing final opportunity! We greatly appreciate any donation that you can provide to help us make our trip to Iowa and compete for the World Title.
