Conquering Mount Kilimanjaro for Willen Hospice MK
Support Our Journey!
Dear Friends, Family, and Supporters, We are thrilled to announce that my brother-in-law, Thomas Hewitson, and I have taken on an extraordinary challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in January next year.
Our goal is not only to achieve a personal feat but also to raise funds and awareness for the incredible Willen Hospice MK charity.
Why Kilimanjaro? This majestic mountain represents a towering symbol of strength, determination, and resilience—qualities that resonate deeply with the patients, families, and caregivers at Willen Hospice MK. We believe that by pushing our physical and mental boundaries, we can embody the courage shown by those facing end-of-life challenges every day.
Our climb plan is rigorous and exhilarating. Let us take you through the journey:
Day 1-2: Arrival in Tanzania After departing from London, we will embark on an overnight flight before landing in Tanzania, brimming with excitement and anticipation.
Day 3-5: Big Tree - Barranco Camp Starting from the foothills west of the mountain, we will immerse ourselves in the lush vegetation and trek towards our first camp at 'Big Tree Camp' (2,780m). The following day, we will enter the enchanting Moorland landscape, adorned with captivating shrubs and flora, and camp at the breathtaking Shira Plateau, situated above the cloud line at 3,850m. Continuing our journey, we will pass the iconic Lava Tower and the ice field of Kibo before reaching Barranco Camp (3,972m), just below the renowned Barranco wall.
Day 6-7: Karanga Camp - Kosovo We will conquer the Barranco wall, exhilarated by the challenge, and proceed to Karanga Camp for a well-deserved rest at 3,995m. The next morning, we will embark on a six-hour trek to Kosovo Camp (4,800m), where we will prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the ultimate summit attempt. A few hours of sleep will be crucial before our awakening around 11 PM.
Day 8: Summit Night & Descent This is the day we have been tirelessly preparing for! Just before midnight, guided by the light of our torches, we will commence the six-hour trek, overcoming the most challenging and demanding part of our journey. Stella Point (5,730m) at Kilimanjaro's crater rim will be a moment of triumph and respite. With renewed energy, we will traverse to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the African continent, standing tall at 5,895m. As the sun rises, painting the landscape with its golden hues, we will be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the plains below and the distant Mount Meru, feeling on top of the world! After capturing unforgettable moments on camera, we will begin the demanding descent to Kosovo Camp, where a rest and a hearty brunch await. Our journey will continue to Millennium Camp at 3,950m.
Day 9-11: Moshi & Departure The final leg of our expedition involves a four to five-hour trek from Millennium Camp, leading us to the gate where our remarkable journey began. Moshi will be our destination—a place to celebrate our triumph and bid farewell to Kilimanjaro.
But here's where we need your support. We are reaching out to you, our beloved community, to join us on this meaningful journey by donating generously to Willen Hospice MK. Your contribution will directly impact the lives of patients and their families, ensuring that they receive the compassionate care and support they need during challenging times.
