Nick's Oyster Gardening Eagle Project

Donation protected
My name is Nick. I am a Scout in St John’s Boy Scout Troop 450. I am contacting the community to request support for my Eagle Scout Project.

Every year our Troop teams with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to participate in their oyster restoration project. For those that do not know, oyster gardeners, raise spat (baby oysters) over the winter months. In the spring, those spat are returned to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to be distributed in the Magothy River oyster reef. Our Troop typically raises thousands of juvenile oysters every year, making our Troop the single most significant contributor to this project in the northern bay area. A single adult oyster can filter 50 gallons of water per day, so you can see how this project benefits everyone who uses our beautiful waterways.

I will raise approximately 2,000 lbs of spat in Cypress Creek this winter for my Eagle project. These oysters will be housed in floats for about 5-6 months. The goal of my project is not only to raise thousands of oysters this year but to grow the project for future years. I am requesting assistance from the community to raise approximately $1,500 to fund the creation of 8 new floats and make repairs to our existing 24 floats. This will allow the Troop to add roughly 30% more oysters in future years.
