My Dad has been a Diabetic for 27 years. In the past five years he has dealt with several medical problems secondary to his disease.
In the summer of 2010, he suffered a heart attack while we were riding ATVs in the mountains. He had to have a stint placed in his heart and was able to return to his job as a Deputy Sheriff for a local Sheriff’s Office in Centennial CO.
Two years later he suffered an injury to his right foot and it became infected due to mismanagement of the infection by health care providers. Within in a few months he had to have the first of two amputations done. They removed his right big toe and continued to treat the infection.
The infection and the numerous amounts of meds damaged his kidneys greatly. While they continued to fight the infection he had to undergo his second amputation on his left foot where the infection had spread too. He had to have a small outer portion of that foot removed. He was then able to return to work.
Doctors continued to follow his failing kidneys and in November of 2014 he had to be taken to the ER and was then admitted to the hospital to have a line placed in his chest for emergency dialysis. He was released a few days later and returned to work while starting a regular dialysis treatment regiment. He would go in for treatment in the evening where he would spend the night then in the morning go to work.
This is still his basic schedule while he waits for a double transplant referred to as a “SPK” transplant. This is a Simultaneous Pancreas & Kidney transplant. He has been waiting on this list for almost two years.
The medical bills along with the numerous medications have taken a huge toll on his finances. He no longer has any savings and is struggling to get by.
Once he receives his transplant we are not sure what the cost will be to him and know he does not have enough time in sick and vacation to take care of his recovery time. FMLA will secure his job but not the bills.
This past October he was involved in an auto accident where he had a diabetic episode where he totaled his truck. We are just thankful the truck was the only casualty. By the grace of God no one was hurt or killed. This is now another medical bill to add to the others.
After a career of public service he is having trouble asking for help. He graduated high school in Denver and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served as a Firefighter/Special Rescue until he received an Honorable Discharge. He then went to work on an ambulance in Colorado Springs, CO and also worked in an ER in Aurora, CO where he also assisted on Air Life Flights.
For the past 18 years he has been a Deputy Sheriff and is currently employed with a local Sheriff’s Office in Centennial, CO.
His Agency has bent over backwards to help him through all this but he does not want to directly ask them for more help than they have already given him.
My Dad has raised me by himself since I was 12 years old and we have become each other’s support system. So it’s my chance to help him now.
Thank you for taking the time to read his story.
