I met Justin at the bus stop in the third grade since we lived on the same street. We became close friends very quickly and shared many of the same interests. Lots of time was spent in the outdoors and playing sports. Growing up together, we spent lots of time playing baseball and often times even against each other. Fishing was probably one of our favorite past times and it was never a competition. We were always just happy for each other no matter what we caught or how many. Our friendship lasted all through elementary school and into high school. Even being in different schools and living in different areas our friendship never faltered. There was even a time when things got a little tough for him and he lived with us. It seemed we were destined to be lifelong friends. Which did prove to be true and it followed us into adulthood.
I always tried to look out for him and decided to introduce him to a co-worker. He and Nicole were a great match and they didn't take long to start a life together. I was glad she was able to get to know the guy that I had grown up with. He had such a big heart, infectious smile and laughter and a generous spirit. These were all qualities that made him a great dad. That was probably when I saw him the happiest.
What is truly tragic about this loss is who he leaves behind. Not only Nicole but two amazing little girls who now don't have their father. They will all feel his loss in ways many of us can't understand. We often look for a glimmer of hope in a tragedy. What can we learn to pass on to others? In the case of Justin, it is to bring awareness to Mental Health. We never know what is happening on the inside and only see what they are willing to show to us. Behind a bright smile or a laugh can be pain that we don't see nor understand. Justin has left behind so many others that loved him and will miss him dearly. It is unfortunately too late for him to know just how much this was true for him. Hopefully his story can bring awareness to those whom may feel despair or not understand how much their life means to others.
Lets never forgot his kindness and generosity or all the fond and happy memories that we have of him. His passing is certainly unexpected and a tragedy words cannot describe. Please help the family of Justin Lee Erickson by contributing whatever you can. You can never plan for an unexpected death or the financial burdens that it brings. This is obviously a difficult time for the family that he has left behind, with a growing burden of final expenses. Nicole is now left to raise their beautiful daughters on her own and could certainly use the donations to help not only cover final expenses but also for the needs of their girls. Justin was young and he hadn't plan for their future without him. Please consider doing what you can to help his family. They will greatly appreciate it and I know that Justin would feel so grateful that his three favorite people that he loved so much are being cared for.
