Nidia Needs Our Help: Stage 4 Cancer

Dearest family and friends,

An unthinkable nightmare has happened. Our beloved nanny, Nidia, who is only 40 years old, was rushed to the hospital for what we thought was gallstone pain. Imaging confirmed gallstones but also many liver masses consistent with stage 4 cancer. Her bloodwork is terrible, showing profound anemia, low platelets, and a severely inflamed liver. She is getting transfused as I write this. She is not stable enough to even leave the hospital.

The primary site of cancer has not been identified yet. The tests and procedures that are being ordered are frighteningly long. Nidia is so scared. Her first response to her cancer diagnosis was, "What about my son?" Her son is in Peru, and with the state of immigration, being able to get a VISA may be our next nightmare.

We are all devastated. I have not told my own children. But I so very desperately need your help. Any financial assistance, or medical connections to top local oncological units that have compassionate care, as Nidia does not have insurance, Catholic support to a priest that is Spanish-speaking, we need any and all resources on board.

Please spread this if possible. I (Ellie) cannot fight this one alone...

Ha ocurrido una pesadilla inimaginable. Nuestra querida niñera, Nidia, de tan solo 40 años, fue trasladada de urgencia al hospital por lo que creíamos que era dolor de cálculos biliares. Las imágenes confirmaron cálculos biliares, pero también numerosas masas hepáticas compatibles con cáncer en estadio 4. Sus análisis de sangre son pésimos: muestran anemia grave, plaquetas bajas y un hígado gravemente inflamado. Mientras escribo esto, le están haciendo una transfusión. No está lo suficientemente estable como para salir del hospital.

Aún no se ha identificado el foco primario del cáncer. Las pruebas y procedimientos que se están solicitando son terriblemente largos. Nidia está muy asustada. Su primera reacción ante el diagnóstico de cáncer fue: "¿Y mi hijo?". Su hijo está en Perú, y con la situación migratoria actual, obtener una visa podría ser nuestra próxima pesadilla.

Estamos todos devastados. No se lo he contado a mis hijos. Pero necesito desesperadamente su ayuda. Cualquier ayuda financiera o contactos médicos con las mejores unidades oncológicas locales que ofrezcan atención compasiva, ya que Nidia no tiene seguro médico, apoyo católico a través de un sacerdote hispanohablante; necesitamos todos los recursos necesarios.
