NIMBY is a DIY, Maker, and industrial arts space in East Oakland. One thing’s for sure, NIMBY is a different kind of space, full of stuff, like a carefully curated library of the strange and esoteric. It is real and, yes, it gets dirty, because sometimes experimenting and creating means getting dirty. It is difficult to stay clean when you’re struggling through the creative process. This is the place where people come to execute the ideas after they’ve said: “Imagine if…” or “What if I…”
At NIMBY, the part you need or skill you are lacking can often be found with the person next to you. People need a space to create, to use their hands, and to learn new skills. NIMBY provides a space where people can transform everyday objects into epic works of art, where people can explore their passion, and where people can stop spectating and start participating.
Art spaces in the Bay Area may be disappearing, but after 13 years, NIMBY aims to keep thriving.
WHY AND WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR:
Summer is our busiest time of year, especially as we get ever closer to Burning Man, and our tenants will be using the newly redesigned and expanded wood working area to accomplish their goals and will need fork lifts to move their materials and larger projects.
We have secured dust collecting systems for different areas of the wood working area, but as happens when you’re on a budget, they didn’t come with all the parts to assemble. In addition, we will need to add some electrical conduit to bring power to the new equipment. Your funds will allow us to get a much safer, cleaner and efficient woodshop in operation.
One of the assets of NIMBY is our outdoor yard for art cars, tiny homes, and large art pieces. Sometimes we need to move these larger projects around the space. Projects, art pieces, equipment need to be loaded in and out for Burning Man and other events. This requires fork lifts to be well maintained and kept in good repair to ensure that this work can be done safely and efficiently.
We strive to do our own repairs and maintenance around the warehouse, and while NIMBY has many talented volunteers that can do incredible work, at times we need to hire professionals to work on the 10,000 lb (or more) forklift that can cause real damage if it breaks down at the wrong moment.
WHO BENEFITS:
Like the old song goes, we need a little help from our friends. Your assistance will have a real, positive benefit to the community of artists at NIMBY.
The dust collection isn’t just about cleanliness; it’s also about air quality and the overall health of our artists and makers. Addressing the needs of our forklifts BEFORE they break down, gives everyone access to reliable equipment.
These improvements allow NIMBY to better serve our community, and allow them to focus on what they do best: creating amazing art, hacking into hardware, building strange, new things, innovating housing, and bringing all of it to the world outside the warehouse whether in Oakland, at Burning Man, or around the world.
