Help for Nina and her children

Donation protected
Nina, a great mom and a hard working person, sacrifices herself, and works two jobs to support her family.  She works tirelessly to provide for her two children, Keshawn (13 yrs. old) and Samantha (10 yrs. old).  Her life revolves around them.

On January 5, 2016, Nina consulted their family doctor regarding Samantha's unusual multiple bruises.  She requested blood work for Samantha.  When the results came later that night, the doctor told Nina to bring   Samantha  to the ER, as her laboratory results were abnormal.  The doctors in the ER doctor ran additional tests  and they suspected that she may have Leukemia. They decided to transfer Samantha to Children's Hospital Los Angeles where she could be seen by a pediatric oncologist and receive the proper treatment.

At 2 AM on January 6, 2016, Samantha was transported via ambulance with her mom to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, an hour and a half drive away.  The Children's Hospital Los Angeles ran another series of tests. Samantha was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia  or AML, a very aggressive cancer.  That day was the lowest point of their lives.  They never saw it coming as Samantha hadn’t shown any signs of illness.  She immediately received multiple blood transfusions. The following day, she underwent 3 invasive procedures, as the oncologist wanted her to start chemotherapy right away.  She didn't do too well during the procedures and had to be transferred to the critical care unit.  Samantha became really sick and had difficulty breathing.  She developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome  (ARDS) and had to be intubated and could only breathe by way of a machine.  It was only 2 days after her arrival at Children’s Hospital that she had gone from a vibrant little girl to a very sick patient on a respirator.  With the healing power of prayers and a good medical team, our precious Samantha awoke after a week of intubation and is now undergoing an aggressive chemo therapy.

Last year, Nina’s son, Keshawn, was taken to the ER several times for seizures.  He was diagnosed with Epilepsy.  Nina also has a medical condition that requires surgery, but it has now been delayed in order for her to focus on both of her children.

Nina has been very brave for her children, especially for Samantha.  However, the anguish of watching her children  suffer is taking its toll on her.  Nina is currently on leave without pay to take care of Samantha.  The financial aspect has added a heavy burden to their situation.  She can’t understand why this is happening to her and her children.  Her children are the only treasures in her life; no other wealth but her children. No mother should have to see her child suffer, let alone all of her children.

Keshawn is now on medication and is being constantly monitored, while Samantha is fighting for her life.  She had completed her first round of chemotherapy but her body has not responded as well to the treatment as her oncologist had hoped.  She continues to receive blood transfusions and still needs to undergo another round of chemotherapy using more aggressive chemo drugs.

When Nina first found out about Samantha’s condition, she cried and Samantha asked her why she was crying. Nina told her that she was worried.  Samantha proceeded to say “Mom stop crying. I’ll be ok.  Please do not to tell anyone about me because I don’t want anyone to be sad and worried.”  Samantha is such a brave, sweet, young girl; full of dreams.  She never complains, and even though she is going through a lot of pain, she always says that she's okay.

Samantha has a long way to go….  This family is going through a tough time and they need our support.
