Lex is a non-binary, trans-masculine, queerdo, and actual angel on earth.
An activist who is passionate about fighting for the empowerment of marginalized people, Lex makes himself available as a marshall and medic at marches. While he is in recovery from substance use (9 years!), self-harm and suicide, and disordered eating, he is always ready to show up for others by volunteers to bring clean syringes, Narcan, and wound care to people in chaotic substance use, and to lend an ear and encouraging message to friends and strangers who are struggling. Lex believes whole-heartedly in mutual aid, and has taken advantage of the free time he has gained during this pandemic to volunteer delivering food to elderly and house-bound people, serving meals and resources, and showing up when there is need in his community of Paterson.
He's most known in the local NJ punk/metal music scene as vocalist/noisemaker for Sunrot, and for booking shows as Nihilum Inc. He is also very passionate about suicide prevention, and has thrown an annual fundraising show called sludge for suicide
Lex works at a high school for students with autism and prides himself in making connections based on respect and playfulness with students others can find difficult. Lex is a wonderful fiance, and never hesitates to take care of their family that includes two small children, and a menagerie of rescue animals. He looks forward to returning to school to complete a degree in social work so that he is one step closer to building a program aimed at providing trans youth experiencing housing insecurity with safety, resources, and community.
The surgical modification of his chest will greatly improve Lex's quality of life in several ways:
- It will greatly decrease his body dysphoria and dysmorphia, two things that have caused suicidal and self-harm behaviors.
- It will alleviate triggers of sexual assault related to his chest and empower him to continue to heal from those experiences.
- He will be able to stop binding after years, which is restrictive and uncomfortable (and will allow him to donate his binders!)
- It will allow him to start exercising without being triggered so that he can more effectively run from the cops.
-As a bonus, Lex is quitting smoking to get his surgery, which is good for his lungs!
For those of you lucky enough to not know how traumatizing the pursuit of top surgery can be, I need to let you know that no other body modification requires the applicant to be as dehumanized as a trans person seeking gender-affirming surgery. Lex has had a psychiatrist diagnose him with "clinically stressed the fuck out by his chest in a serious way", has had to strip naked so a man could take pictures of and handle his body (which is bad enough for someone who hasn't experienced sexual violence), and has had to undergo the devastating process of his insurance denying three appeals to allow his chosen surgeon to perform the surgery.
The good news is that Lex has found a surgeon that he is confident can perform the surgery, was given a date, and he trusts in his community to help make it happen!
break down of where funds will be used:
16,000 surgery
4,000 stay in a hospital, including an anesthesiologist who won't kill him considering he is fat, has asthma, and has a heart condition.
5,000 to cover GFM fees, supplies, and healing time.
