Special Kids Saving the Environment

Donation protected
Our school is a place of hope, partnerships, and success. We are proud of our administration, curriculum, partnerships with our colleagues and community to collaborate and best educate and include our students with special needs. We celebrate our diversity in many ways, including learning about different cultures and environments and what we can do to help those environments thrive.

Along with developing students academic understanding of basic skills and concepts, we also provide them with training in life skills such as sorting and appropriate interaction with peers and adults. As a school in a Title 1 District, where all children get free or reduced lunch, we service students ages 5 to 21 with severe developmental delays.

Our goal is to partner with Terracycle (terracycle.com) to create a school wide recycling program. So much of our waste could be used, and our school plans to make a difference for the world by recycling instead of trashing. Through this program, our students will learn to identify and sort items in the classroom, and will get essential job training through collecting and sending the recycled products.

We will need to purchase Zero Waste boxes from Terracycle, as well as recycling bins and mailing boxes. We are going to be recycling batteries (Zero Waste box: $142), art supplies (Zero Waste box: $222), juice pouches (Zero Waste box: $154), ink cartridges (Zero Waste box: $138), milk cartons (Local Community Partnership), aerosol cans, binders, oral and personal care products, instrument strings, and writing instruments (through Terracycle Mailing Program). Recycling sorting bins are $50, and we will need at least 6 of them in order to support the large amounts of waste that we want to recycle in our school.

Our students are exceptional souls that teach us every day. We know the importance of helping the earth, and would like to model environmental consciousness to our students and give them the tools to become successful global citizens. Because our children have the power to help shape the future, so it is important as educators to provide them with the strategies to create a beautiful, vibrant future for everyone.
