NO CONDO yard signs, referendum, legal fund
Donation protected
Hello, Hollywood neighbors!
You may have noticed hundreds of yard signs around our city raising awareness about the proposal to allow developers to have a 99 year lease for a 347 foot, 30 story condo tower on our public oceanfront land. There are signs now in every commission district in the city.
Thanks to a group of donations we were able to buy the signs and fulfill your requests. We have also been distributing stickers, and have begun collecting signatures to override the City commission's decision.
Follow this facebook page. A group of caring Hollywood citizens run this facebook page:
This campaign will either be won by a vote from our county commissioners (to deny the land use amendment/swap for density), legalities, or a public referendum. If it gets decided with a public referendum, we will use funds for more yard signs, flyers, door hangers, and filing fees. Referendum: "The electors shall have the power, in accordance with the provisions of this Article 5, to approve or reject at the polls any measure passed by the commission or submitted by the commission to a vote of the electors, such power being known as a referendum." We will also need money for legal fees.
Thank you for your support in protecting our beautiful public oceanfront land, and please reuse your yard sign instead of sending it to the landfill. We will have a celebration on the beach at Azalea Terrace when we defeat this awful plan, and you can bring the yard sign to me at the celebration and I will reuse it for a future purpose.

The vote was on March 16th and the condo proposal passed 5-2.
YES votes: Callari, Sherwood, Gruber, Levy, Biederman.
NO votes: Shuham, Anderson.
Related Group offered to make the building about 5 stories shorter at the 3/16 meeting. (Biederman and Gruber said they wouldn't be opposed to 30 stories because it means more money). Mayor Levy said the strong opposition was because those opposed must have been swayed by slanted information with a false narrative.
Next steps: From what we understand, the ways to stop this project would be-
1. Stopping it at the County level, as the City would need a land use amendment from Broward County. Broward Commission emails:
https://www.broward.org/Commission/Pages/default.aspx
2. A public referendum. Will need 15% of the signatures of the registered voters in Hollywood. Registered voters would need to sign the official referendum petition in-person, on paper (not online). Once 15% are collected, the City Clerk would verify all the signatures to make sure they are all registered voters. This could overturn the decision of the City Commission. Stay tuned for updates.
3. Attorneys are currently meeting about this to discuss next steps/possible legal arguments. Legal research has fees associated. No lawsuit has been filed yet.
