No Haircut For One Year
At the beginning of my 65th year last February, in order to raise some money for charity, I agreed, with some trepidation, not to cut my hair for one whole year up to the date of my 65th birthday in February 2025.
In the past, I have been guilty of unkind thoughts about men in business who don't seem to visit the barber enough (sorry Chris) so the growth of my floppy mane has not only caused me embarrassment but also resulted in some stoicism and a perhaps a little humility. I've included before and after photos which record my discomfort.
I'd like to raise £10,000 for a certain type of charity more than one particular charity, although Ben's Centre is a good example. The type of charity I'd like to support are those who provide practical day-to-day help and support on a completely non-judgemental basis, to people who might have made some poor choices in their lives - often, but not always, involving substances or addictive habits, and they are now cast adrift on our streets without the tools or the momentum to save themselves from further decline.
The key here is "non-judgemental". These charities do their work without making negative judgments or assumptions. Which of us haven't made a poor decision at some point in our lives.......and so there, but for the grace of God, go I.
For this reason, perhaps my friends and business friends in other parts of the country might like to recommend a similar local charity, and we'll find a way to divvy up whatever we raise?
I'm going to start the ball rolling with £1,000; any amount will be massively appreciated - let's see how far we can get.
Ben's Centre for Vulnerable People is a day centre and Outreach service in the centre of Sheffield. It supports vulnerable clients with a range of issues, some of these range from homelessness, substance misuse, mental and physical health and any issues connected with their lifestyles.
