No Justice, No Sleep

No Justice No Sleep is a mutual aid project that raises money to get Black folks weighted blankets and body pillows.
The pandemic has begged many of us to answer questions like “Where is home for me? How do I recharge?” It’s also exhausted our preconceived notions of home as a place to revitalize, since home is now the office, gym, and classroom all in one room for so many.
Current circumstances have pushed societal discourse examining who is safe at home - and who isn’t - from the periphery towards the center of conversations around what it means to actually shelter at home. Not everyone considers “home” a refuge.
For Black people, home should be a safe haven from the racism of the outside world, but systemic inequity doesn’t sleep- so, often neither do those affected by it.
Inadequate sleep impacts overall health, combined with America’s history of medical racism- the perfect storm is created that funnels Black people through a pipeline of poor sleep that leads to physical and mental issues.
-Why weighted blankets and body pillows?
Body pillows and weighted blankets can help improve sleep and reduce anxiety. A 2015 study found that weighted blankets increase sleep quality and caused participants to have “a calmer night’s sleep, with a decrease in movements. Subjectively, they believed that using the blanket provided them with a more comfortable, better quality, and more secure sleep. In conclusion, a weighted blanket may aid in reducing insomnia through increased tactile and proprioceptive inputs, may provide an innovative, nonpharmacological approach and complementary tool to improve sleep quality.” (source: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1380/9417/files/weighted_blanket_sleep_study.pdf?3892973362559857474)
Body pillows can help relieve joint pain and are ergonomically designed to support the body during sleep, including aiding with spinal alignment and improved circulation among other things.
