I’m gonna start this off by saying that I never expected to find myself on this side of a go fund me page, being the one writing in search of help. Help for my husband Robert and myself, my sister-in-law, Pam and my brother-in-law, Mark. If you don’t know us, you may not know we just lost our mom, Karen Hammann due to complications with Covid’s newer delta variant. We are all heartbroken. Mom was the kindest soul. Even if she had nothing, she would give the shirt off her back to help someone. She would give her time to anyone who needed to talk, such a great listener. And she loved her grand babies and great grand babies with her entire being.
A year ago mom was diagnosed with lung cancer and she went through all the radiation treatments prescribed. We were excited to hear the news last month, the tumor was shrinking. That excitement was short lived though. A week later, we discovered a tumor was growing behind her eye and she was diagnosed with ocular cancer, she would begin going blind. Then one week ago, she contracted Covid and was admitted to the hospital. She immediately signed a do not resuscitate, do not intubate order (in addition to signing a DNR at another hospital when she was first diagnosed with cancer). So, we were well aware of moms wishes. After a few short days, she began refusing treatment. Breathing was getting more and more difficult, she was fighting with every inhalation. She then contracted pneumonia and literally gave up. She wanted us to let her go and we couldn’t go against her wishes. Mom passed away late Tuesday night, on 9/7/21.
Yesterday, the four of us went to the funeral home to make the final arrangements. Without choosing to even have a service or adding any extras like an actual urn to put her in, her cremation alone is going to cost us over $3000. We then went to moms house to discover a large pile of bills that had been left unpaid, including medical bills and several personal loans she had taken out without our knowledge, and she was being charged 36% interest!!!
Now, the four of us are left to come up with nearly $12,000 to pay this debt. And we haven’t even seen the final hospital bills. All of us are currently living paycheck-to-paycheck, like most people in the world today, and have no idea how we are going to do this.
What I am asking of our friends, family, and those who may not even know us, is for your help so we can make it through these difficult times without the added financial stress and struggle. If you have the means to donate anything, $2, $5, $10. Every little bit will help to minimize the strain just that much more.
We thank you all for your love, kindness and emotional support. Without that, we would have already fallen.
We love you all!
Sincerely,
Pam, Rob, Mark & Dawn
