Have you ever got home from a trip to the supermarket feeling incredibly guilty about the fact that you’ve just stolen and spent your own money on your own food? I have. In fact I’ve been in that position countless times and it wasn’t just guilt I felt, it was disgust, absolute terror and also that I had indeed committed a crime and should be arrested. Because I shouldn’t have spent the first money I had in a whole month on myself, it should instead have been distributed between the neverending stream of companies harassing me for money that I owed them.
I’m talking about the breath sapping, paranoia inducing, wrinkle giving, brain mangling and soul destroying subject that is being in debt. Actually I’m writing a book about it but that’s another story.
One of my earliest memories is watching the 1985 Live Aid. It sparked a lifelong ambition of wanting to help others and it is quite simply insane to know that nearly 40 years later not much has changed, not in the grand scheme of things. Of course the aim for Live Aid was to help people living on a different continent and my God was it a brilliant idea (and a superb show). But it’s now 2023. A rapidly increasing number of human beings in our own country are being left to live in poverty through no fault of their own and all I can imagine is that a significant portion of our country is going to end up living just like they do on those appeal advertisements we have got so used to watching on telly (if they aren’t already).
Who is organising our superstar fundraising concert? There isn’t even a record.
Ironically, Do They Know It’s Christmas is one of my favourite songs of all time. I’m sure last December countless families didn’t want to know it was Christmas and this year Bono’s goosebump giving and spine tingling lyric “Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you” will ring true for most of us, not just “them”. By the way I’ve no clue whatsoever why that lyric was altered, it’s the best bit of the (original) song.
Companies don’t really care that you have nothing to give them, they will harass you to the death anyway… forever assuming that you are going to pluck £500 out of your empty backside just for them.
Your phone rings dozens of times a day, 14 hours a day. 7 days a week. Plus there are texts, emails, unwarned visits and many trees worth of threatening letters to boot. This is all bloody marvellous behaviour when targeting a person with mental health issues who is already scared of speaking to people. And if you didn’t have a mental health condition before, you will now you can’t pay your bills!
You then get awarded with a CCJ because it’s the exact kick up the rear you need when desperately trying to improve your financial situation to be able to repay them and others…
Certain official organisations claim to want to help but actually, they don’t.
They tell you talking helps. It definitely does, whilst you’re amid conversation. But what do you think happens when the conversation is over?
Oh… cheers for the tip of telling us to turn our heating down or off to save money. Ticked but personally I’d prefer not to freeze to death in my own home (or even to avoid frostbite on my hands next winter would be a good start) and I certainly won’t stand by and allow our elders to be left to do that either.
Let’s face it. All that matters is the big man. And he is a world class Dementor (interpret that in whatever context you fancy).
This shit has to stop. We are the world and we are the future. What will be left for todays children if most of us are flat broke and consumed with debt (or dead from the stress)?
I run a community initiative which exists to help both people and animals in need, whether that be with funding, food, supplies, housing, employment, medical treatment, companionship, support, legal advice or even working through a bucket list. It will also work to encourage companies to change how they respond to customer difficulties by pointing out that their multiple phone calls a day and insensitive letters might just well be the final straw for any one of us. I want them to understand that if a payment is missed, or even multiple, it isn’t because we have suddenly decided to stop paying them in preference of going on a luxury holiday. Nor have we reversed the ageing process and been reborn as a toddler and therefore must be spoken to like one; it’s simply because we have fallen into difficult times (often through no fault of our own) and physically cannot pay them at the moment.
My organisation is called Rainbow of Hearts and all I need you to do is spare another minute of your time. You can donate money, pledge to purchase one of our inspirational products or just help to spread awareness by sharing this campaign.
There are 8 billion people on this planet and by my calculations, even if 10% of you donate £1.00 that’s an awful lot of people we can help. Even more if all the really rich folk donate £2.00 each…
If you haven’t been in debt before, you are truly lucky. Know that it is one of the worst feelings a person can have, especially when they have others relying on them. If you have been in debt, you already know what I’m talking about.
You can view or purchase our fundraising products here. If you pledge in exchange for a product through this GoFundMe please send an email with your product purchase requirements to the email address on our webpage.
