No Toxic Waste Incinerator for Tarago
Donation protected
Communities Against The Tarago Incinerator (CATTI) is an incorporated organisation seeking donations to help fight a toxic industrial waste incinerator being built by Veolia in Tarago, New South Wales. We need your help to tell the NSW Government what the community really thinks of Veolia's plan!
Tarago is a rural-residential town with a proud history located 30 minutes south of Goulburn and 1 hour north-east of Canberra. It has a 143 year old public school, a preschool and a 173 year old historic pub.
Our town has put up with a decade of ever increasing odour issues from the existing Veolia landfill site located on an old zinc and copper mine. The site already takes approximately 40% of Sydney's waste which is transported here via train.
Now Veolia wants to build a toxic waste incinerator in our town that will burn at least 380,000 tonnes of Sydney's waste per year for at least the next 30 years. This will threaten the human, animal and environmental health of this town and the entire region.
If this incinerator is built it has the potential to effect more that just our region, as Tarago sits in the Sydney Drinking Water Catchment. The contaminants from an incinerator that fall on our roofs and make their way into our water tanks and household water, may also end up in the drinking water of Sydney residents.
Our region is also major agricultural hub which produces large amounts of lamb, beef, and canola, all of which have the very real potential to be contaminated and eaten by unsuspecting consumers.
The NSW Government has recently recognised that these facilities threaten population health and that there is no safe threshold of impact for a number of the pollutants they create.
The NSW Government should not continue to treat its regions as dumping grounds for toxic waste and should instead be insisting that major cities take responsibility for their own trash.
Waste incinerators are not the answer, they are a poorly applied - and toxic - band-aid solution.
Thank you for your support!
