Nohea Keaunui-Gould is a new mother to a beautiful baby girl. A little over a year ago she noticed something unusual under her jaw. She asked people about it but they all said it was “probably nothing” so she ignored it. Less than a month later she found out she was pregnant and that unusual lump under her jaw became the least of her concerns. Her world was quickly changing as she and everyone around her prepared for this new step in her life.

During an appointment with her OBGYN she asked about the lump in her neck. The lump was about now about the size of an M&M. Her OBGYN told her it was probably just a fatty deposit and not to worry about it until after her pregnancy was over. The safety of her baby was the most important thing.

After an emotional, hard, exciting, and beautiful 9 months, Nohea was finally in labor. Her labor was induced on December 29th and after 16 hours of being in labor the decision was made to take mommy and baby into emergency surgery. Nohea’s umbilical cord was wrapped around baby’s neck 4 times and her body once. Nohea and Jay had never been so scared as they waited in the OR for her emergency C-section Then, on December 30, 2018, their beautiful baby girl, Addison Ku’ulei Gerardi, was born.

A month later, after adjusting to being a new mom, Nohea finally went to the doctor to get the lump, now the size of a grape, in her neck checked out. After getting the run around from her OBGYN, her PCP, her ENT, and her insurance, she was sent in for a CT scan. After her CT scan she was sent in for an ultrasound guided FNA, a biopsy. The biopsy included getting 5 needles stuck in her neck to pull samples from this lump. After a long and stressful wait, the results came back.

On Thursday March 14th, 2019 Nohea was diagnosed with Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma, cancer of the parotid gland. This gland is also known as your salivary gland and contains the facial nerve that controls her facial movements.

Nohea wanted to get this taken care of as soon as possible and immediately began the process. After getting the runaround once again from all of her doctors, she was finally able to schedule a consultation with a head and neck surgeon for cancer at Celebration Hospital and she will be undergoing surgery on Wednesday April 3rd, 2019.

Anyone who knows Nohea, knows that she is not the type of person to ask for help, but right now she NEEDS it, however we can give it. Whether it be through thoughts, prayers, sharing this post, or a donation to this fund, no matter how small. Nohea is a kind-hearted and honest person who loves meeting new people and brings happiness to anyone she meets. Whether you know her or not, whatever you can do to help her and her family during this time of need would be an amazing gesture.
