Preserve the Noke Kuin Heritage: A Culture facing extinction.
Imagine a world where an entire culture, with its ancient wisdom and traditions, is on the verge of disappearing forever. This is not a distant possibility; it’s the reality facing the Noke Kuin (Katukina People), deep within the Amazon rainforest. With only 1,000 members remaining, their unique culture and language, Noke Vana, are at the brink of extinction.
Main Challenge: Cultural Erosion | Growing dependencies
Cultural erosion is the gravest challenge the Noke Kuin face. Economic hardships have forced many younger members to seek livelihoods in urban areas, interrupting the transmission of traditional knowledge, language, and practices. As the elders—guardians of wisdom about the Amazon’s plants and healing practices—pass away, many due to COVID-19, the community’s ability to preserve its cultural heritage diminishes. Without intervention, the Noke Kuin's rich cultural identity is at high risk of being lost forever.
Additionally the construction of a new road near their ancient grounds has introduced profound changes to the their ecosystem. The noise and increased human activity have driven away the animals vital to their survival, making hunting difficult and forcing the Noke Kuin to rely on external support. This road threatens their way of life and heightens the urgency to protect their culture and autonomy.
The Vision of a Cultural Centre.
A Cultural Center is essential for safeguarding and revitalizing the Noke Kuin’s cultural identity. It will serve as a sanctuary where their ancient traditions are lived and preserved, keeping the community deeply connected to their roots.
Intentions for the Center:
This Center will be the beating heart of the Noke Kuin community, a sacred place where the central fire of their culture is kindled and kept burning bright. Here, their way of life and ancient wisdom are actively lived and witnessed, thriving in an empowered way. This inspires younger generations to embrace and carry forward their rich heritage, ensuring that the profound knowledge of the Amazon’s plants and healing practices continues to flourish, preserving the Noke Kuin identity for generations to come.
Beyond preservation, the Cultural Center will become a hub for international exchange, creating economic opportunities that empower the community and foster independence, building a sustainable foundation for generations to come.
