Non-killing animal shelter "Dobrik"
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kristina Shagun
I was born and raised in Belarus. I live in the USA and I am genuinely amazed at how many people help animals here, unlike in Belarus there are fewer organizations and volunteers helping animals. Out of 6 central regions with a population of a little over 9 million people, only ONE non-killing shelter that exists in the country where dogs and cats are not euthanized is
“Vitebsk DOBRIK”. The director of "Dobrik" (means Kind Soul) Alla Prasolova, an admirable and honorable person, who has devoted her life to advocating for Belorussian animals.
Overview of the situation of treating stray animals in Belarus
The story of "Vitebsk Dobrik" begins in 2011, where dogs and cats live until they are taken to a new home or until their life ends. Dobrik is funded solely by Belarussian citizens and some organizations, which is insufficient for Dobrik to care for over 400 animals living there, which vary from the season. In the winter they occasionally reach their maximum number of 500 abandoned and homeless stray dogs and cats, left to die in the harsh Belorussian winter weather, in the spring/summer, the number drops to 400 dogs and cats. For almost 12 years, about 12,000 animals have passed through Dobrik walls.
Every month, they selflessly open their doors to over 70 animals, stretching their resources to the limit in order to offer these vulnerable creatures a safe haven. Some lucky ones find a new home. But many of them are not so lucky. Cats are finding their loving home better, than dogs, especially senior dogs, almost every senior dog lives there until their end. The oldest dog, named Dobrik (which means Kind Soul) is now over 12 years, and in his honor, they called the shelter his name.
Adult dogs live in outside enclosures, in winter, their kennels are covered with wooden pallets so that they do not lie on the bare pavement. Puppies and teenagers are kept in a building where it is warmer. And in general, the problem of bedding for the inhabitants of the shelter is very urgent. Something wears out, and something breaks into small pieces during the game.
Dobrik is not only a forever home for unfortunate orphans, it is a place, where pets are treated, vaccinated, and sterilized. The urgent need for medication is a life-threatening situation for furry friends, living in Dobrik. In Belarus, there are significant challenges when it comes to affording medications to treat abandoned animals. The combination of a lack of medication importation and high prices creates a difficult situation for Dobrik for the care of these animals. The cost of medication per month reaches up to $6,000, the average monthly salary per person in Belarus, which stands at around $300. With such a significant disparity, allocating funds for animal healthcare becomes an overwhelming burden. In order to operate the shelter, where so so many animals find their forever home requires annual expenses can reach approximately $100,000.
- Paying bills is a recurring expense that ensures the shelter remains functional and provides a safe environment for the animals. These costs can amount to around $1,200 per month, covering utilities, water, electricity, heating, and other essential services.
- Medications play a vital role in maintaining the health of the shelter's residents. With a large number of animals to care for, the monthly cost of medications can rise to approximately $6,000.
- Providing proper nutrition for a significant number of animals can cost approximately $500 per month
- Regular visits to veterinary hospitals are essential for routine check-ups, and treatments, and for addressing any medical concerns. The cost of these visits can average around $2,000 per month
- The shelter also requires regular repairs and improvements to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for the animals. These costs can vary but typically amount to at least $1,200 per month. Repairs may include fixing enclosures, addressing plumbing or electrical issues, or renovating the premises to accommodate the growing number of animals.
- Additionally, the operating cost of the shelter includes other expenses such as staffing, administrative costs, transportation, cleaning supplies, and various miscellaneous needs that arise during the day-to-day operations.
I'm reaching out to you personally to ask for your support in making a difference in the lives of abandoned animals in Belarus. "Vitebsk Dobrik" is facing an incredible challenge. They are dedicated to providing a safe haven for these helpless souls, but it's becoming increasingly difficult due to limited funds. Dobrik's mission to care for over 500 abandoned animals feels almost impossible without the help of generous individuals like you. Your donation can have a significant impact on their lives. Every contribution counts! Your support can provide crucial medications, food, and veterinary care for these innocent beings.
I am personally committed to this cause. In the middle of August, I will be traveling to Belarus to meet Alla, the shelter's director, and deliver your donations in person. I will document and share the journey with you, so you can see the direct impact your support has on these animals. Your kindness and compassion will make a real difference in the lives of these abandoned souls. Together, we can give them a chance at a happier, healthier future. Please join me in this important mission. Even a small donation can go a long way. Share this campaign with your friends, family, and on social media to help spread the word. Thank you for being a part of this life-changing journey!
