Non-Profit Seed Money: Family Dance
Donation protected
Hello everyone and thank you for visiting our GoFundMe page!
My name is Brian Melendez, I'm a Northern / Southern Paiute - Western Shoshone: Community Leader; American Indian Spirituality Scholar; and Practitioner of Great Basin Indigenous Custom(s) and Culture(s); CEO / Problem Solver of Lucentree, LLC; and Host of the Coffee with an Indian, Podcast.
In addition to that, I possess an Associates in Occupational Science, a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice, and a Master’s in Justice Management. I’m a Category 1: Law Enforcement Officer for the State of Nevada, and have worked in the Tribal, Public, and Private sectors for over a decade.
This is a fundraiser to establish a nonprofit organization called: Family Dance.
This campaign is aimed at raising the funds required to build Family Dance from the ground up. Incorporation and application for nonprofit and 501(c)(3) status is costly (and complicated) and requires that we secure a lawyer with nonprofit experience.
Family Dance will provide training and services for the direct (and indirect) enhancement of human capital and social equity of Indigenous peoples, and other marginalized communities. This service includes the use of philosophical, logistical, and strategic methods, for the creation of effective and sustainable communities.
We envision a world, that operates in alignment with nature. A world that exists beyond the confines of capitalism and consumer driven ideologies. Family Dance is an Indigenous perspective, that’s focused on creating strong families and re-instilling a strong connection to the land; values that are often lost in modern living.
Directly from the Bylaws, the specific objectives and purpose of this organization shall be:
· To dismantle poverty, systematic oppression, mass homelessness, and mental anguish associated with colonization and misrepresentation. The intention of Family Dance is to cross pollinate resources, time, and energy where and when we can for the betterment of humanity and nature.
· To provide knowledge, facilities, equipment and a land use, for the promotion of food sovereignty, sustainable agriculture, healthy living, and development of green economies.
· To provide opportunities for participants to engage in community-based banking and loan systems, and savings groups—in order to build community capacity, for people to solve their own problems—by hosting finance workshops focused on personal finance, customer service, marketing, management, and entrepreneurship.
· To provide opportunities for all participants to energetically and spiritually connect with the land, their ancestors, and with themselves, for the development of spiritual self-determination, and the healing of intergenerational trauma, and planting seeds for the future.
We know that with your help, we can make a difference in the world. From our tribal community, we do so much already, that a non-profit, was a next obvious step for us. As a collective, we’ve been doing community building and wellness work for nearly two decades and we’re pretty good at it!
Here's what we need to get started:
· $50 to file the Articles of Incorporation paperwork with the State of Nevada
· $850 to submit FORM 1023 (501(c)(3) organizations) to obtain Tax Exempt Status
· $200 for legal advisement for the paperwork and various filing requirements
· $100 for new logo, domain address, and website security
This will help us setup the non-profit organization. We would also be interested in people willing to donate expertise for web design, branding, or the legal advisement.
While we have many volunteers, we also need to fund some salaried staff in order to sustain the operations: just throwing that out there. We take transparency, efficiency, and honesty very seriously, and we will keep an up-to-date income and expenditure report available on our website, once it’s up and running.
Any and all donations from this campaign that exceed the startup needs for Family Dance will be rolled over into the direct-action fund and will be used to achieve the goals listed above.
No donation is too big or small. We plan on having our first Board Meeting mid-December and hope to have a non-profit status by January.
Thank you so much for your support of Family Dance. Together, we're going to leave this world better than when we found it.
