WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

Food justice is of paramount importance as it addresses the fundamental right of every individual to access nutritious and culturally appropriate food. In a world where nearly 690 million people suffer from hunger, and countless others experience food insecurity, advocating for food justice is crucial. It goes beyond simply providing nutrition; it emphasizes the need to dismantle systemic inequalities that perpetuate food deserts, limited food access in marginalized communities, and exploitative agricultural practices.

Food justice is intrinsically tied to social justice, as it recognizes that certain groups, such as low-income families, people of color, and indigenous communities, disproportionately bear the burden of food insecurity. By promoting equitable food distribution and empowering local farmers and food producers, food justice builds up resilient and self-sufficient communities. It also highlights that traditional agricultural practices have a harmful impact our environment and the urgent need for sustainable and ethical practices to ensure a healthier planet for future generations.

Furthermore, food justice recognizes the cultural significance of food and the need to preserve diverse and rich culinary traditions. By supporting local food systems and promoting food sovereignty, we pay homage to indigenous knowledge and promote a deeper connection to the land. Ultimately, the pursuit of food justice fosters healthier communities, promotes economic stability, and contributes to a more equitable and compassionate world. Embracing food justice as a core principle is not only vital for ensuring the basic human right to food but also serves as a stepping stone toward building a fairer and more inclusive society.

WHAT'S THE MISSION?

As a Raleigh native, born and raised, Shy is firmly committed to addressing food justice issues, especially within Wake County. Shy is passionate about gardening, sustainability, plant education, and providing fresh, healthy, and nutritious produce and herbs to her community. Combining her love for gardening and plant education, along with her desire to support the community, she has been successful in connecting and engaging with folks throughout the county with her business- Shy's Fresh Eats. She has been integral in leading innovative initiatives with high social impacts. She disseminates educational materials geared towards addressing food insecurity, facilitates plant-focused educational workshops, and creates and distributes healthy and fresh goods and products at local markets.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Shy is seeking funds to ignite the inception of a non-profit organization focused on providing tools of knowledge, resources, and the expertise needed for BIPOC persons to grow their own food at no cost to them. The funds will be allocated towards non-profit registration, all related fees, leasing space and tools at an incubator farm and transportation of supplies to farm and market.
