Northumberland Mask Force: Face Shield Campaign
Donation protected
Update: May 28, 2020
We have officially suspended emergency operations and brought our production to an end. We stand ready to address future need. This is the final week of open/unrestricted distribution of free face shields to the community.
Overview/Original Appeal
Welcome to the Northumberland Mask Force: Face Shield Campaign brought to you by the Northumberland.io Producer Alliance. With our community experiencing shortages of personal protective equipment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are building our own supply chain for local production and donation of face shields for front-line workers across Northumberland.
Our self-organized community-based alliance of producers, makers, manufacturers, engineers and volunteers built a distributed operation that has ramped up production to an average of 282 units per day (2020-05-13) -- a 263% increase in production since we launched on GoFundMe. With the support of so many individuals and organizations we produced 7,105 face shields!
We utilized the Prusa RC3 open source design to unify and optimize our supply chain. Our face shields are donated to hospitals, emergency services, long-term care facilities and retirement communities (as well as community living and similar organizations) and essential services.
The general public asked how they can help and we responded with this crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe which is being managed on behalf of the producers alliance by Northumberland CFDC (an innovation and entrepreneurship NGO located at Venture13 in Cobourg). And now we need your help!
Please consider donating what you can to this community innovation initiative. Your donation will cover the direct costs of production of face shields that will be donated to hospitals, long-term care facilities and retirement communities, emergency and first responders and essential services in Northumberland.
This includes:
- materials and supplies
- filament for 3D-printing face shield parts
- other much-needed components and equipment
STRETCH GOAL ANNOUNCED 2020-04-27: help us go to 250/units per day and expand outreach to the small businesses across Northumberland that are part of the essential workplaces category: let's work to ensure we can protect all front-line workers.
In the unlikely event that any funds raised by this campaign are not needed, they will be donated to Northumberland Hills Hospital and Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundations.
"This is about community and the passion we all have to use advanced technology and innovation to drive production of personal protective equipment for front-line workers,” said Colin Slade, retired Canadian Coast Guard Captain and Quality Assurance lead. “With all of the support we have received from volunteers, industry and partners, we are able to make a real difference under extremely challenging circumstances. Thank you to everyone who has and will continue to support us in this effort. We know we can count on you."
