Family and friends,
On Thursday morning (June 2nd) our family home of 42 years burned to the ground. Our 75 year old father, Clive, was home with Sahara, his 8 year old granddaughter, while Bernadette, his wife of 42 years, was travelling and his daughter out of town. He pulled Sahara out and everyone is safe but the house and all contents are lost. We are also very grateful that our housekeeper Margaret and her family were also safe and were able to be of immediate comfort to both Dad and Sahara. Sahara lost her hamster and her budgie in the flames and is devastated.
The impact on all of us is staggering.
The main house is ash, although the surrounding buildings - the cottage and the housekeepers home - are untouched. It has been bewildering for all of us, and we are taking things step by step. Mom and our youngest brother, Bobby arrive back in Bulawayo this weekend. Dad is staying with the neighbours for now. The community support has been overwhelming, and our parents are seeing the love they have given the people in the area over 40 years coming back to them in spades. They have received many donations of clothing and towels but we know there will be many big decisions in the weeks ahead.
One of the big issues is that there is no insurance coverage on the house. As many of you know life in Zimbabwe is challenging, and because of cash shortages, a personal decision was made not pay their own premiums for the time being in order to make sure the employees would receive wages. This has come from their strong sense of community, caring and putting others first. This was one of those times that they were putting others needs in front of their own and unfortunately tragedy hit.
Many of you have asked how you can help: we have set up this page to collect donations to help them start again.
In the midst of all of this we are so aware how grateful we are to have a close knit and caring family, in spite of the distance between us, and an amazing network of friends and so aware that many others do not have this. We have decided to direct extra donations of clothing and 10% of the funds we raise, to the Edith Duly Nursing Home in Bulawayo, which takes care of a number of seniors who are alone in their final years.
Many of you have been touched by our parents and the generous love they have given our community over the years. Or you know one of the numerous Terry children, and have been impacted by their presence in your world.
If you are able to contribute and support our parents as they begin life again, please do. We are so grateful for your love and support for all of us right now.
Thank you from the bottom of our widely dispersed hearts!!
