Please help support Chicago’s oldest house! The Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, built in 1833, is located in Chicago’s historic Norwood Park neighborhood. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Chicago Landmark. In 1987, this architectural jewel was saved from demolition through the effort of local residents.
The 1833 farmhouse, built on a ridge by early settler Mark Noble, now forms the southern wing of the house. Rising up from the prairie, it was for years the only farmhouse for miles around. Although it was only eleven miles away from the newly formed city of Chicago, reaching the city by horse-drawn wagon could take hours travelling over uneven and often muddy trails. In 1868, the house was expanded with the construction of an Italianate addition on its north side. A few years later, in 1874, the area would become the Village of Norwood Park and in 1893, the Village would be annexed to the City of Chicago.
Established in 1973, the Norwood Park Historical Society (NPHS), housed in the Noble-Seymour-Crippen House, operates a museum documenting local northwest side history and is dedicated to preserving this landmarked house and other historically or architecturally significant buildings in the neighborhood.
The Norwood Park Historical Society serves to be a leader in the community by:
• Preserving the oldest house in Chicago to serve as a community resource.
• Participating actively in community affairs in order to advocate for the preservation of the unique character of the Norwood Park community, including its historic architecture, open spaces and streetscapes.
• Developing and maintaining a museum and historical archives related to Norwood Park, including its National Register district.
• Educating, informing and building awareness of the part each of us plays in the evolving history of our families, community, nation and world.
• Serving as a resource for those seeking historical information about the community, its people, homes, businesses and institutions, as well as offering guidance.
The Covid-19 pandemic has eliminated many of our fund-raising events. Our goal of $50,000 will cover our operating expenses for the upcoming months and will keep us afloat until we can hold our yearly fund-raisers. A donation of any size will make a difference!
