Not One More Domestic Worker Abused in Indonesia
Donation protected
Domestic Workers in Indonesia have been fighting for 19 years for a law to protect their rights. However, it has not materialized yet. Every day, a new domestic worker in Indonesia is abused.
Currently, a Domestic Worker ogranization, Jala PRT, in Inodnesia, is supporting 5 cases of women seeking justice against their employers, the most sever of which is the case of Siti Khotimah , a domestic worker abused by her employer and 6 people working for him.
For three months, Khotimah faced all types of brutal harassment: she was chained at the dog’s room, forced to eat dog feces and drink her own urine, splashed with boiling water, and suffered harassment and abuse. As a result, her body has numerous wounds, her feet and hands have been severely affected (open fracture, burn, blisters). After surviving the abuse, she was hospitalized for four months, but still requires surgery as she is unable to walk properly. This, on top of severe trauma that keeps her up at night.
Siti Khotimah escaped from that torture when her employer ordered the family driver to throw her into the river, but he decided to leave her in her hometown. After knowing what had happened to Siti and seeing her injuries, her family immediately reported the case to the Police. Nine perpetrators were later arrested and are currently undergoing trial.
Lita Anngraini, a prominent Domestic Workers' advocate in Indonesia and a leader at Jala PRT, has been resourcing some support from the community. However, the support is limited and the need is great. Jala PRT is currently handling 5 similar cases in which the domestic worker was the main breadwinner for her family. The survivors need the following:
1) Support for legal fees so they can access justice
2) Support with medical fees so they can recover
3) Livelihood support for their families so they can sustain themselves during this time.
By contributing to this crowdfunding, you will be helping 5 survivors turn around their lives. You would be supporting a 19-year-old battle for justice and labor rights in Indonesia.
Every day without a domestic workers’ law, is a day with a new victim.
Every day without a law is a new Khotimah.
All donations count and go a long way.
No more postponing domestic workers' Rights!
Every week, we will be sharing updates from the case and the difference your support makes.
