Nova Scotia Community Solidarity Fund
An emergency fund for people living throughout Nova Scotia

What:
The public health response to the COVID-19 virus will continue to have an unprecedented impact on our lives and livelihoods for the foreseeable future. This means many closures; which are necessary to keep the community safe. However, they do have an impact on our community members, particularly those who are working in the service sector, such as retail, entertainment, hospitality, and the gig community of freelancers, artists and performers. Many will lose their sources of income and might have a difficult time making ends meet. Additionally, school closure will impact many families who rely on meal programs to feed their children. In short, this is placing additional burdens on limited financial resources.

Why:
As a result, the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group is launching a fundraising campaign for people in Nova Scotia who need support during this time.

Who:
Based on the application, we will be providing a one-time grant of $100 to community members in Nova Scotia through an online application process. We are launching this fund to reach as many people as possible. You will only be permitted to apply once as funds are limited.

Our goal is to provide assistance to as many community members as possible during this difficult time based on their need.

The intention of this fund is to support individuals, who as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, will be impacted with unexpected costs such as funds for basic necessities (childcare, food, rent, etc.); for loss of income for gig economy workers; for seniors and the elderly, persons with disabilites; and those already facing daily challenges of capitalism and precarious housing.

How:
As funds become available, they will be distributed via e-transfer. We will continually update community members through the Gofundme page and our Facebook page.

****To apply to the fund as a recipient, please access the application form for the Nova Scotia Community Solidarity Fund:

https://forms.gle/QmGNX2McYbpGReJ59

Please only apply if you DO NOT have access to financial alternatives such as savings, investments, continued employment, or other sources of income to rely on during this time.

Our System:

This fund will be created based on a shared community system. We want to reduce barriers while accessing support, while being transparent and accountable to all community members.

We want to honour this commitment by trusting that those who have the means will not apply, and leave this fund to be available to those who will be faced with undue hardships because of COVID-19.

This fund is limited. Utilizing community donations and our grants, we will continue to disburse funds for as as long as possible, but recognize that this will not be sufficient enough to bridge the gaps caused by this crisis.

To maintain transparency and ensure individuals privacy, we will only be providing periodic updates to our community through the Gofund me and Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Nova-Scotia-Community-Solidarity-Fund-111663737131650/) on the donations received, the amounts disbursed and the number of individuals who received emergency funds.

**You can also donate to the fund with e-transfers made to [email redacted]

This community fund is initiated and facilitated by the Nova Scotia Public Interest Research Group (NSPIRG), a group of community organizers, located in Halifax, NS.

Thank you to Black Lives Matter Halifax for their support in creating the templates for this fund.

Once this crisis has passed and NSPIRG goes back to regular social and environmental programming - we hope that you will consider becoming a community member! Annual membership fees of $9 help ensure the sustainability of our organization and our capacity to mobilize and assist community needs.
