NSBP-HGS MENTORING PROGRAM

Tax deductible

Funds raised will be used to provide mentees with hands-on STEAM learning opportunities, provide resources for our constituents, and cover programmatic costs.

In Fall of 2020, The National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) and Harlem Gallery of Science (HGS) kicked off an innovative, culturally-responsive virtual-mentoring program for underserved youth from Harlem, Upper Manhattan, and the South Bronx. The goal is simple: empower youth through positive role models from similar backgrounds to create meaningful, sustained, academic-focused relationships. College student volunteers from across the U.S. mentor adolescent-aged students helping mentees equip themselves with skills for academic success, cultivate interest in STEAM careers, create better life outcomes, and combat the feelings of isolation associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

This program is in partnership with Science and Arts Engagement New York, HGS, NSBP, The City College of New York, Hamilton Grange Middle School, Eagle Academy of Harlem, and New York Math Academy and Coaching Services.

For more info check out the program webpage.

The mentoring program was conceived by Dr. Stephon Alexander, a Bronx native, a Professor of Physics at Brown University and President of the National Society of Black Physicists. He serves as the Executive Director of the Harlem Gallery of Science.
