An update from Mel:

Hey all, Just wanted to provide an update.

 My professor/ specialist has provided an update after receiving my biopsy results, which confirms I was initially misdiagnosed, and in fact I have Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) an extremely rare form of appendix cancer, which affects approximately 1 in 500,000 people worldwide, and is often initially misdiagnosed as ovarian cancer. Whilst it is rare, it is more treatable than ovarian cancer. PMP is a cancer that forms in the appendix and produces a jelly like substance that then fills the abdominal cavity and spreads to the lining of other organs in my case the peritoneum, liver, bowel and ovaries. On the 10th of December I had my appendix removed as well as some masses on my ovaries, however I will be required to undergo extensive surgery in the new year to remove all of the ‘jelly’ coating my abdomen and organs. The surgery will take up to 14 hours and I’ll likely spend a further 3-4 weeks in hospital following the procedure, which I assume then after I will begin a course of chemotherapy. I will also require a hysterectomy at a later date. I am hoping to be discharged from hospital in the coming days to spend Christmas with my family before preparing for another round of surgery in the new year. Whilst this sounds daunting and I have a long road ahead, my specialist has assured me this is curable and I have age and health on my side, which is the best Christmas gift I could have asked for! My name is Laura, and I am Mel’s sister in law.

In the last few days Mel and her family have unfortunately been given some horrible news that no family wants to hear.

After a weekend hospital stay, and a mountain of tests and scans, Mel has been told she has cancer in her ovaries - which has been there for quite some time. This has also now spread to her liver. Mel is now waiting for surgery and other treatment options, but as you can imagine these things cost money, as do bills and every day living. We want to take the burden of these things away and raise as much money as we can so the family doesn’t have to stress or worry through this challenging time.

For anyone that knows Mel, knows she is the most caring, kind, selfless person, who never asks for help. She is a wonderful wife to Barry, an amazing mother to two beautiful twin boys, and a step mum to a beautiful girl.

She is loyal and would do anything for anyone.
