Nurse & Educator Misty to remobilize her training business

Welcome,
I am relaunching my successful training business "Jumpstart" with a new focus on education to support a safer health care environment for staff and patients.
Nursing in Perth and Remote Western Australian (WA) hospitals, I witness first-hand the challenges around "problem behavior" and the tension and burn out it creates.
I have also come to realize that I have a bit of a skill for
de-escalation and preventing escalation in the first place that makes for a much more enjoyable, therapeutic and safer workplace.
My aim is for a win-win: Where in helping health care staff understand the impact of trauma on a patient biologically, to recognize the signs and symptoms, respond in a trauma informed way and resist retraumatizing - they also find a reduction in aggression, more connection with their patient, less burn out and more joy in their work. The evidence speaks for itself!
Dr Karen Martin from UWA is working with the WA public school system on becoming trauma informed and I hope to learn from her work and many others to shift the paradigm in our health care system.
From "what is wrong with you?" to "what happened to you?" ...it's a very powerful and positive cultural shift.
The people I have spoken with to gain their thoughts and input on my plans are very supportive and can see the enormous value of such training.
Sometimes I feel that I am too small against such a big system like our Health care system, "how do you change a system like the system?" but change has to start somewhere! I'm confident that I can start this training and gather data on the positive outcomes such as reduced-
Calls for security "code blacks" in hospitals
DAMA rates (Discharged Against Medical Advice) and
DNAs (Did Not Attends).
I would like to see staff and patient experience surveys reflect improvements in satisfaction.
Data leads to changes and from what I can see there is no research in this field in WA as yet.
Trauma Informed Practice is set to become a new "universal precaution".
Internationally, health care systems are still catching up with the effects of childhood trauma but the awareness if starting.
I know I have the unique set of skills, knowledge and experience to create health care specific, trauma informed care training that will make a difference for patients, staff, the system and broader community.
I'm seeking funding to help re-establish and grow my training business.
Funds will go towards-
Create engaging and meaningful training content
Connecting with researchers and other people working in their field
Travel to and accommodation in locations to provide the training
Advertisement of my training to reach relevant stakeholders
Creation of a robust evaluation system and communication of outcomes for change.
Thank you so much for your support, this is going to be big and I'm ready for it!
Your support, whatever amount is valued both from the ability to deliver this training but also in the show of support for this project.
I look forward to keeping you up to date with my progress. The first will be next week when I will fly to Adelaide to attend the APNA (Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association) conference. I look forward to networking and learning what might be happening in this space elsewhere in Australia.
I had a patient recently say, "you are the only person here who sees me", I hope to help more patients and nurses enjoy the same connection.
Thank you
Kind regards
Misty
