To make this very short (I'll try) I met Elizabeth at of all places a Plant Gala. It was hot mid summer and many of us plant fanatics gasping after the adrenalin rush for refreshments with what few cents we had left.
All my life I have tried to pluck a thistle and plant a flower wherever the flower would grow in thought and mind. -- Abraham Lincoln, 16th US President
I managed to catch a table and sat down to my snack and drink, I noticed a woman looking high and low for a place to sit, Veggie burger/drink in one hand toting her special finds in the other, I stopped her, asked if she would like to share the table? The seats were empty! She thanked me and we began to chat plants, plants, plants. Did you see this? How about that? As we were to part ways, suddenly it began to pour, not a cloud in the sky but pouring. Before we knew it, it was the beginning of a very short friendship that lasted 12 short years.
We didn't live that far apart and, as it seemed had allot in common, we were plant hoarders. We had exchanged phone numbers and vowed to stay in touch, we did every day for the next 12 years.
One day I came home from work and found Elizabeth at the house, (my best friend had a key) she had put the leaves in my dining room table and spread Christmas paper white side up...for her need to color? There were pencils, markers and measuring devices and she was busy. My husband looked at me and said she was here when I came home! When I looked 1/2 the table, able to seat 10 was covered in a fantasy covered diagram.
Of what and why? She wasn't crazy but she did everything with purpose and focus.
I made some coffee, sliced pound cake for 2, went to the table and said "What-cha doin?"
This is our Nursery! How's that exactly? She went on to explain. Over the next couple of months we bounced around ideas, thoughts and changes. I approached my husband with it...GO FOR IT! I can't keep you two apart might as well be together for a reason! It's a great idea!
About a year later we were ready to dive in, we had researched, researched, researched, scrimped, saved, haggled and contracted. She had enrolled in class for landscape design (she was already an interior designer), I for small business management (I was foreman for a construction establishment) Just as we were going to sign a lease on 5 acres of land, the results of her annual physical exam came in, stage 4 breast cancer, threw massive surgery, chemo and radiation all she could focus on was the Nursery...when this is over...when I am better...when I'm up to it...
When her Mom contacted me and explained funds had run dry, I gave her the contents of the business fund thinking...when this is over. ..when she feels better...when shes up to it.
At the funeral her mother handed me an envelope with Elizabeth's hand writing on it, it took me weeks to open it, but this was the contents...
A garden is evidence of faith. It links us with all the misty figures of the past who also planted and were nourished by the fruits of their planting. -- Gladys Taber, American author (born 4/12/1899)
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
When the clouds close and the sky turns steel blue...
Imagine the rain is just morning dew.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
When the wind blows and the branches clatter...
Imagine the rains as Mother Natures banter.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
When the rain splats, pitter pat...
Imagine it's me saying "Hello" from the shadow.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
When the breeze brightens and the scent is heightened...
Imagine I'm there with you, in denim blue.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
When the day seems long, not much to do, air is warm and your fore long...
Imagine the dream, what a dynamic scene, you and me as a team, now your dream.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
The clouds are moving the sun shows threw...
Imagine moving along as if I'm with you!
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
The sun pokes threw the clouds close up...
Imagine the plans that were made, the changes we craved, the sacrifices to be paid.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
Rain, rain, go away my friend must find her way...
Imagine back to the days, we set seeds of dreams, setting the scene, of our independence theme.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
My days were short, my aspirations grand, but I'm gone now let go of my hand...
Imagine instead, me in your heart, as you go forth for both of us.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
Don't look back, keep your head held high, you have our goal as your guide...
Imagine Patti if you will. I know it's hard to see, but remember you and me, were close as friends could be? When it rains let it pour and your flowers will soar.
Think of me when it rains, every sun soaked drop...
We envisioned it, drew it out, started to own it, then all went flop...
Don't let it lay there, pick it up, don't let this be the final stop. Please don't let the dream die with me, make it fly and be free, get your hands dirty, et your back ache, a nursery you'll have for Christ sake!
With love and the best life can offer with warm hugs! Elizabeth
The goal was simple, to help people connect with there inner gardener. To teach, guide and simplify, to share what we had learned in a fun and happy place.
We adopted this Motto from, Edward Bok and his Grand Mother:
Make you the world a bit better or more
beautiful because you have lived in it .
Since Elizabeth's passing, I have done many things toward accomplishing this goal.
#1 I went to school for small business management.
#2 I worked in 2 huge retail nurseries, both with different business models, making little but learned from both what works and what doesn't.
#3 Worked for 2 propagation nurseries (Still presently)
making pennies take home but gained insurmountable experience and knowledge that school just can't offer.
#4 Talked with the City to gain permission for the placement, it was a fight...but I won, they won't deny the site for a retail nursery, I have there blessing.
#5 I have found new personal purpose, gained insight and respect for the nursery trade. I am finally emotionally and educationally ready to open the Nursery of Dreams.
My only obstacle now is funding.

The research is done, the new site picked and planned, the education with practical experience has been paid and accomplished, now I need a helping hand.
Back then Elizabeth and I needed $20,000.-$25,000. to start but things have changed. The site, the people, the market but there have been some great changes as well!
A place to conduct classes for the common homeowner, a plan to harvest rain water to be environmentally friendly, not wasteful, a small library and the addition of a farmers market.
There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments. -- Janet Kilburn Phillips
My intention is to hire 3 local residents full of energy, and as much enthusiasium as we can all muster!
Our town needs more employment opportunities and small business, we need to move, GROW FORWARD!
I believe if I'm not part of a solution
I'm part of the problem
Other than big box stores with everyday Ho hum plant materials, we don't have a real honest to goodness nursery, a nursery with a want to help, the education, patience to explain it, and plants that can send the imagination soaring, with areas of inspiration and reflection, a place to gather, find new friends as well as find locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs.
I would have loved to been able to share Elizabeth's original rendition and vision (she drew much better than me) but unfortunately this was lost due to water damage in a hurricane. This is the new vision surely to be tweaked and refined.
My actual goal is much bigger for projects I would eventually like to add, but all this will come with time... one accomplishment, one stepping stone, one goal, one project, one day at a time. I have saved on my own $12,000 so the rest I am counting on from generous "GOFUNDME" supporters like you.
Future projects:
Delivery truck
Green house
Shade house
Hoop houses
Childrens play area
Paved sidewalks
